1. Chapter One – School
As I stepped out of the shower and dried myself, I thought about things. What’s the meaning of life; what is the 62nd number of pi; I wonder where my brother is, that sort of thing. Normal 17-year-old thoughts, of course – every Grade 11 student would think the same. I slipped on my bra and underwear, and then was interrupted.
“Hurry up, Lil!” My best friend Tyra, also 17, was banging on the door.
“Yeah, yeah Tyrant,” I called back. I wrapped the towel around me, grabbed my toiletry bag, PJs and dressing gown and walked out in my towel.
“Finally,” she moaned, dashing into the newly empty stall. I walked back to my dorm and dropped my PJs into the dirty clothes basket by the door. Selecting a pair of black skinny jeans and a pink sleeveless top, I slipped them on and moved to hair.
I’m Lillian Ashley Granger. I’m 17 and in Grade 11 at Falcon Hills Secondary Boarding School (A/N: I made this up; sorry if it is real and I stole it – I mean the place (Falcon Hills) and the school name). Yes, I go to boarding school. It is co-ed, we don’t have a uniform and we share a dormitory with three other girls – Tyra, Michelle and Meg. I have blue eyes and straight blonde hair that is currently in a ponytail.
I checked my watch. It was 7:30 exactly. I dashed to the bathroom and brushed my teeth; by now it was busy. I went back to my dorm, chose owl earrings and my pink breast cancer watch and then packed my little black backpack. Slipping on pink Vans and glancing at my outfit in the mirror, I went down to breakfast.

An hour later in homeroom, I was flicking through my emails on my phone. I had one from a website; three from a shopping centre (promotions bleurgh) and one from the Tyrant. I glanced up; she was sitting across the room, laughing. I opened the email.
Look at this! And with it was a web address for some YouTube thing. Okay, it was a bad singer on the X-Factor. Pretty funny! I giggled as well and emailed back,
Text me you goof; emails take too long
She shook her head and put her phone away; we tuned in to the morning announcements.
“Next door, at Falcon Hills Primary Day School, a child ran into a glass door and had to be taken to hospital; please do not run in the school and be extra careful to look that there is no door in front of you,” droned our deputy principal. I glanced at Tyra, trying not to laugh. A kid ran through a glass door? At least it didn’t break; the kid could have been injured badly.
“And in other news, Grade Eleven is asked to meet in First Hall at 2:00pm to receive their big assignment; Grade Eight has a whole grade Transition meeting, also at 2:00pm, in Second Hall; Grade Ten has exam tips in Fourth Hall at 2:25; Grade Twelve and Nine have normal classes all day. Thankyou Falcon Hills Secondary Boarding School and have a great day,” he signed off. The bell rang and I glanced at my timetable: Double Maths, ew! I hated my Math teacher; Ms Eye was hideous. She was like Professor Umbridge! But I enjoyed Math because I got decent grades. I just put my headphones in, turned Music on my laptop and tuned her out completely.
Today we are revising algebra was written on the board. I dropped into a seat beside Ty and pulled out my books; flipping to page 427 in my textbook, I located the exercises listed on the board, opened my laptop and went to my saved music. Apparently the teacher entered at some point - I don’t know, I wasn’t focusing. Blip. An email!
