2. Chapter Two – The Meeting

“We’re off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of,” my group sang as we skipped along. We all looked at Chloey, who sang, “Hogsmeade!”

“And we’re off to see the wizard, the magical wizard of,” we sang. Megan said, “Abydos!”

“Meegs,” we all groaned at her. “Enough with the stupid Doctor Who things!”

“Sorry! Anyway, are we off?”

“We’re off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of-”

“Sunnydale!”

“Hey guys, we’re here!”

Yep, they’re my girls; my crazy, nerdy, unpopular, totally awesome gang of girlies. We’ve been friends since Grade Eight, when we started here. There’s Chloey, Zoe, Megan, Meg, Grace Milvent and Grace Velma, Chanel, Aimee, Suzannah and Riley. They rock!

“Settle down please; settle down,” requested our principal, Mrs Andersonn. We all quickly sat on the floor in a random shaped group and turned to face her.

“Good afternoon everyone,” she said.

“Good afternoon Mrs Andersonn,” we replied boringly.

“Good afternoon everyone!” She always wanted a more enthusiastic answer.

“Good afternoon Mrs Andersonn,” we yelled back.

“Welcome here on this very nice afternoon. As you know, it is now August, which means your big assignment! This year quite a few teams have come together this year to put together something really spectacular. A few of them are Business, Finance, Science, Math, Hospitality, Home Economics, English and, of course, myself. I think that you will find it very enjoyable and challenging; it will give you a new perspective on life and an insight into somebody else’s world. It will force you to work together, to depend on each other and at the same time be independent. Your parents have all agreed to these conditions, by the way. I now have to go talk to Year Ten, so here to introduce it is a Hospitality teacher, Miss Zaella,” Mrs Andersonn said. She left the stage and a redheaded teacher came onto it.

“Hi! So I’m Sophie Rachel Zaella, the new Hospitality teacher here and I’m going to tell you about your big assignment! Basically you are going to be acting as families for three months. Before I explain the details, I’ll give you some reasons. One is that some scientist people want to see how teens react when forced to act a different age; whether a small child or a parent. They are trying to develop some machine thing, I kind of zoned out. Two is that the Business and Finance departments want to see how well you manage on a certain budget – the school is supplying that. Three is also about that; but the Maths department wants to see some facts and figures about income and outcome and savings and all that. Four involves Hospitality and Home Ec – how can you function as a family? Can you cook, clean and look out for each other? Five, the English departments want a written report on your experiences. Six, Drama – you have to act the age you are given. And seven, every department wants to see this. And of course, it’ll be fun,” she explained.

“Your family will live together in one of those houses in the West Section of the school, of which there are sixty. You will have a house number and new address for mail and things. Parents will sleep in the same room; but in two single beds. Your family has one week to get to know each other before classes start again for you. Same time tomorrow you have to come back for the rules – this is an assignment. Also you will have to buy your own food usually, but for now the kitchens are fully stocked.”
