3. Chapter Three – Get-To-Know-You

“Um,” I said. We had checked the house out and then assembled in the lounge room. I had not allowed anyone to choose a room yet; we needed to sort some things out first.

“I’m Harry, I guess you have to call me Dad, and this is Lilli – Mum,” Harry offered.

“Hi,” the kids chorused. Harry saw I was still struggling about what to say so took over.

“First of all, is everyone happy with their name? Lil, grab your laptop so we can note everything.” I jumped up and grabbed my backpack; the wooden floors were cool under my bare feet, because I had immediately seen how tidy everything was and forbidden shoes inside. I put up an Excel Spreadsheet to record everything and put in 8 rows.

Then I looked at Louis, noticing his interesting outfit and cute grin. I smiled back.

“Wait, we need a surname,” Harry realised. “Can we have hyphenated One-Direction please?” I nodded and checked with everybody that it was okay, then typed that in.

“Anyway, is everyone happy with their names?” Everyone nodded and I typed in the names.

“How old does everyone want to be?” I asked.

I smiled at Grace and she offered, “Six.”

“Hey I wanna be six,” Louis complained.

“Calm down Lou,” Harry said.

“Hey, I’ve always wanted twins… are you two up for that?” They nodded eagerly (Grace making sure that she was the youngest) and I turned to Zayn.

“How old do you want to be?”

“Um… I want to be eight and can I have a twin too?”

“Sure… Darcy how old do you wanna be?”

“I’ll be eight too – Zayn’s older twin,” she submitted. I typed it in.

“What about you, Niall?”

“Eleven, is there any food?”

“I’ll make something soon,” I promised. “And, um – how old do you want to be, Liam?”

“Thirteen, because then I’m the oldest,” he decided. Louis stuck his tongue out and Grace laughed at her ’twin’– I could see that they were already getting into character.

“Is anybody allergic to anything?”

“Pollen – I have hay fever – and some marshmallows,” Harry admitted.

“And I can’t eat kiwifruit or Brazil nuts,” Louis said seriously. I typed it in but said, “I’m going to check the school records just in case.”

“Whatever,” Louis said lightly.

“Okay, Harry if you could help them find a room – there are five so maybe if you and I share, the girls could share, Zayn and Louis and then Liam and Niall, to keep one spare? And I’ll make lunch,” I bossed. Harry kissed me on the forehead and led the kids out; on the way, they each hugged me.

“Right then, what should I make?” I asked myself. Healthy seemed like a good option, so I looked in the cupboards. They were fully stocked, as Ms Zaella said they would be, so I grabbed strawberries, a watermelon, bananas and a few oranges. Finding a diagram of the kitchen, I looked for a chopping board, a knife and two platters. I heard running feet and talking coming from upstairs and guessed that there were some arguments going on about bedrooms. I continued to slice through the watermelon; when I was finished, I put Glad Wrap on the half I hadn’t used and chucked it in the refrigerator. Spreading the fruit on one platter, I decided to put a few pieces of chocolate on there too; and I put eight small bowls of melted dipping chocolate on the side. On the other platter, I put carrot-, celery-, cucumber-, capsicum- and bread-sticks along with dips that I found. Going to a whole-house diagram that was by the front door, I located the deck, and carried the food outside onto it.
