Colt's POV

I lied my head down on the closed window. Mom was sleeping in the passenger’s seat while dad was driving. Sage, my little brother, was sitting next to me playing with his iPod.

We've been driving for five hours. Non-stop. It gets pretty boring once your cellphone dies and your charger is packed away in the moving van that's many miles away from you. And talk about your parents singing Nirvana the whole drive to California. It's like hearing Justin Bieber sing 'Baby.

Mom calls this a family bonding but I call this torture. Who would want to spend eighteen hours in a car with your parents? I should've just taken the plane with my sister. But I didn't have a choice. "Shake it down easy, shake it down sleazy, and come on. Shake it down easy, shake yourself, Suzy, come on." Mom sang. I banged my head against the window. Nothing that will cause a concussion. Just knock me out for the rest of the ride. Just to end this torture. "Colt, stop that before you get a concussion."

"Anything that will shorten this trip." I say and Sage started cursing at the game screen.

"Language Sage!"

I snickered and mom hit the top of my head. "What was that for?"

"Be nice to your brother."

"Lay down easy, lay it down seamy, sad man. Lay down easy, lay it down seamy, sad man." dad started to sing and I just unbuckled my seatbelt and tried to open it.

"Child safety lock." mom sang and turned the volume up louder.

OH. MY. GOSH.

I only have twelve more hours till this torture ends.

I woke up with smelling something unpleasant. I opened my eyes to see Sage eating some granola bar. "Throw that out!" I say and he stuck his tongue out at me.

"No. I'm hungry and I need to eat."

"You can starve for all I care."

"COLT." my mother scolded.

"That's not fair!" I wine and then dad stopped the car at a nearby gas station.

Have you ever had the feeling that you know something bad is going to happen and then it suddenly does? I have that feeling. It hurts so much. I need to use the bathroom. "Mom. Could you open the door for me? I really got to go."

Dad got out of the car and opened my door. I nodded thanks and ran into the bathroom and did my business. I washed my hands and dried them off. I walked out of the bathroom and noticed that I had some money in my pocket. I can get a few snacks and a pack of gum for Sage.

I paid for all of the items that I picked out. Dad was at a gas pump looking very frustrated. I wonder what’s wrong.

I walked out of the place and to the car. "What's going on?"

"I'm too tired to drive."

"I can drive for a few hours."

"NO."

"That hurts."

"The last time we let you drive you ended up crashing it into the mailbox. Plus, you have no idea where to go."

"I know that we're in Utah." I tell him and he shook his head. "Please, let me drive, I won't let you down."

Dad sighed but threw the keys at me. I caught them and I got in the driver’s seat. Mom looked at me in horror. Jeez. I'm not going to kill you. Yet. "If I'm going to drive. There will be rules."
