Many owls flew into the Great Hall that morning, but Al was focused only on one- his owl, Mya. His dad had been writing him twice a week, assuming he had been sorted into Gryffindor. However, Al hadn't replied because he wasn't sure how to break the news, or how his dad would react. He kept putting off responding in the hope he wouldn't have to. However, his dad was starting to worry why he wasn't responding, and Al found that he couldn't put it off any longer.
"Worried about your dad?" Dahmari seemed to have really good instincts when it came to reading people, probably because of how many faces she had adopted. This made her really easy to talk to.
"The rest of your family here has totally accepted you. Why wouldn't your dad?"
Al let her words sink in. The more he thought about them, the more they made sense. Dahmari was right. What was the worst that could happen?
Dear Dad,
I'm sorry I haven't been writing you. I've been putting it off because I was scared of how you would react to what I'm about to tell you. There's no point in hiding the news in a bunch of waffle, so here it is.I'm not a Gryffindor. The hat put me in Slytherin.
But don't worry about me! I've made new friends and I'm really enjoying my classes. It feels really good to get this off my chest actually. I can't wait to see you for Christmas holiday! About that, do you think my friend Dahmari can come visit? She's told me about her family, and I think she would really appreciate it.
Thanks!
AlAs Al read over his letter, he became more and more confident. His dad had grown up as an outsider- he would know how it felt. As he tied his letter to Mya's leg, he smiled to himself, knowing that he would finally have come to terms with his Slytherin- ness. In fact, the more he thought about, the more he realized that being a Slytherin was actually pretty cool.
"What are you doing?" Dahmari peered over to look at what Al was writing.
"Inviting you over for Christmas, dummy."

Time seemed to fly by, and soon it was time to go back home for Christmas break. Rose, Al, Dahmari, and Scorpius got a compartment all to themselves in the Hogwarts Express, and they were off. They played games of Exploding Snap, and Rose got them to watch some animated movie called Spirited Away. It was surprisingly good, even though the muggles making it got magic all wrong. The train soon pulled up to King's Cross.
"Dad!" Al ran to his father and hugged him tightly. He had only just realized how much he had missed his dad.
"Hi Al. And this must be Dahmari?"
"Yeah. Thanks for letting me come over! I hope I'm not intruding."
"Nonsense! You will always be welcome here!"
Al grabbed Dahmari by the arm and dragged her into his dad's car. He couldn't wait for his family to meet her.
