Chapter One
"Flashback Part 1 (Merii)"
► ----- ◄
It was dusk; the setting sun draped the entire world in a soft orange color. Leaves rustled quietly as a soft wind whispered past it to an unknown location. A little girl raced around an open, grassy plain in front of a small, one-story house with sweet-smelling smoke escaping from the chimney. She had a large smile plastered on her face. A sudden dark shadow-like Pokémon jumped down from a tree and straight on top of the young girl.
She didn't scream, shout, or yell in surprise. She merely laughed, pulled the Pokémon off of her head, and hugged him. Her light brown hair tickled the Pokémon’s red sensors, and he pushed her away, hopping down.
“Oh, Russel!” she said with a grin. “That didn't tickled that much, hm?”
“Ralts ralts....” Russel mused, looking up at her, showing his amber eyes from behind his green bangs. He shrugged. “Ralts.”
“I knew it didn't!”
The Pokémon grinned. She mirrored his smile and picked him up again. Walking to the small house, she opened up the door and peeked in. The lights were dim, some off, and everything was silent.
“Mummy and Daddy must still be at work,” she whispered quietly. Russel nodded in her arms. “Welp, it looks like we're gonna eat 'lone tanight!”
“Ralts.” Russel responded. The girl put him on an oak wood table. She went over to a cabinet, opened it, and grabbed a bowl and a box full of cereal. Placing the bowl in front of Russel, she poured the exactly half of the bowl. She turned around and got another bowl for herself. This time she poured a bit more.
She slipped into the seat next to the Ralts. “Can't pour the milk 'cause mummy thinks I'll spill it,” she huffed. “Cold cereal for us then!”
Russel was already almost finished. The girl ate slowly, gazing off into the distance. 'When mummy comes home, I'll beat 'er to my name and tell 'er it's Merii!' She nodded to herself, eyes closed, deep in thought. “I will! I'm not Merii-Shay!”
Russel shook his head slightly, his eyes hidden, and hopped down from the table to the chair. He sighed and slipped out the door to the forest.
Merii didn't own Russel. She didn't even have any Pokeballs in her house. He was a wild Ralts who she had befriended when he had wandered into her parents' Daycare Center. He loved sleeping outside in the forest, and would come back to her when she was awake. Merii didn't mind. Russel was his own person.
She yawned. “Welp, I should get going to bed, mm hm,” she said to herself. Humming a song, she walked a short hall, turned left, right, and finally left into her room. It was small and had a bed in one corner, a rug in the middle, and a tiny bookcase that held pictures of her family and other Pokémon Merii had grown fond of when they stayed in the Daycare.
She took off her regular white dress she always wore when she was working at the Daycare and slipped on a blue nightgown. She jumped into bed, got herself comfortable, and closed her eyes. “G'night mummy, daddy. . .” she whispered before dozing off.
She awoke to a pitch-black room to a loud sound. Merii, being the curious type, quietly got out of her bed and tiptoed to the kitchen. No one was there, but the front door was flung open. She crept closer, hid behind the door, and looked out into the dim-lit night.
In front of her, making her hair stand on end and her eyes widen, was one of the largest Pokémon she had ever seen. It had beautiful, rainbow feathers that were folded neatly to its side. A small sparkle of happiness made the way to her heart. 'The Pokémon of eternal happiness. . . Ho-Oh?' was her first thought. But she didn't feel happy. In fact, she felt scared.
Ho-Oh had a human-like shadow underneath its large foot. His talons were dug into the ground, preventing the human from escaping. He bent his magnificent head and nudged the human with his beak. Suddenly, Ho-Oh glanced over at her, freezing the young girl with his murderous, gleaming red eyes.
“Did you really think I would not see you?” he squawked harshly. “I see everything.”
Merii stood, paralyzed. Firstly, Ho-Oh had seen her. Secondly, he had talked to her and she understood. “W-w-what. . .?” Merii spoke quietly, whispering. Ho-Oh grinned, showing sharp teeth. Merii slowly began to duck behind the door. His eyes narrowed and, forgetting about the human he had been content with, stepped forward.
“YOU DARE RUN FROM ME?! I AM HO-OH, GUARDIAN OF THE SKIES! NOTHING EVER ESCAPES FROM ME! NEVER!”
Ho-Oh spread his wings with sparks of fire bouncing off. Flapping them once, the large bird flew up into the air, cawing. Merii couldn't move. 'He's going to kill me.' she thought without anything emotion. 'He's really going to kill me.'
She thought back to the time two years ago, when she had been three. A Pokémon—she couldn't remember what Pokémon—had tried to attack her with a Fire type move. She had been so very scared, but she had never backed down. That's when Russel had saved her.
'Russel's not here. He's perfectly safe, far away from here. I'll have to fight Ho-Oh by... myself.'
She stepped out of the house. The slightly chilly air hit her, but she didn't flinch. Watching the skies, Merii got ready.
“Where are you Ho-Oh? Scared to fight a five-years-old?” she screamed shrilly at no one.
A rush of warm air hit her from the left. 'Flying comes from the skies!' she thought and ducked, sprawling flat on the ground. She shut her eyes tightly.
“RAAALTS!”
“HOO-OOH!”
Merii opened one of her eyes, to see Russel and Ho-Oh standing their grounds as they glared at each other. Russel, completely at a disadvantage in size, brought his hands together as he concentrated. Ho-Oh didn't give him a chance and just let loose a stream of fire from his mouth. The heat was so intense Merii sat up abruptly. She knew what was going to happen to Russel, but she couldn't bear to know that he died without her helping. 'I'm coming Russel!' she screamed in her mind as she stood and ran, pushing herself to the limit.
She got there just in time. Grabbing her partner around the waist, Merii jumped out of the way of the heat. The attack glanced off her right leg, but she barely felt it. Tucking in Russel, Merii rolled once she hit the ground.
“NOW!” she screeched at her partner, holding him up. Russel draw apart his hands, his hidden eyes glowing blue. He shot two light beams at Ho-Oh. Merii, having no idea, drew some of her strength and made the attack stronger. Ho-Oh cawed and flew up in the sky, but not before snatching up the human he had been playing with beforehand. Giving Merii and Russel a glare, Ho-Oh flew off into the sky, creating a rainbow in his trail.
“Merii-Shay? Oh my Arceus, are you all right?!” Merii's mother came running from inside the house. “What happened?”
Merii was too exhausted to say anything. Her eyes drooped as slurred her speech slightly. “Where's...... dada?” Her mother picked her up, tried to take Russel, but the Ralts smack her hand, leaving a red mark. Merii's mother ignored her daughter's question and hustled her inside.
But Merii already knew the answer when she saw her father's beloved straw hat lying on the ground outside of the house.
