Chapter Four
"Meeting"
► Winston ◄
“Ma’am, I need a dozen of Lumiose Galettes, please,” I said, holding up an open paper bag. The lady gave me an oh-look-it’s-the-rich-kid look—the common look most give me—and dumped twelve brown cream-colored cookies with a white three-tip star in the middle of each one into my bag.
“That’ll be three thousand,” she said, holding out her hand.
“Three thousand?! But, but they’re only a hundred each! I bought twelve, so that should be a thousand and two hundred!”
“That’s the price for you. Give me the money, kid. I don’t have all day.”
I huffed in annoyance. I heard muffled giggles behind me. Plunging my hand into my pocket, I grabbed a handful of coins and threw them onto the counter. I didn’t even bother counting them before I rushed away, pulling my hood up, my face hot with shame.
Once I was well away from the shop, I slowed down, looking around to see where I ran to. I checked the nearest sign. ‘Autumnal Avenue' it read. Oh wow, I thought. I didn't know I could run that far and fast! Feeling proud and with my spirits high, I spun around on my heel to head home.
Wham!
I ran straight into a lady as I turned the corner. I tumbled back onto my back, the bag of galettes flying out of my hands. Blinking up in surprise, I immediately jumped to my feet to help the lady up. I reached out my hand, glancing around to see if anyone was watching—and to find my galettes.
“Oh, no thanks, sweetie pie. I can do it myself,” she said, snapping my attention to her as she stoood.
She was a rather short, pretty red-haired woman around her late twenties or early thirties. She watched me with sparkly emerald eyes, smiling, as she pushed her hair that was tied in two long braids behind her shoulder. Although she seemed fancy and well-groomed, I could tell by the way she held herself and talked that she was a farmer. I glanced down at her clothes. Sure enough, they were faded and covered with stains.
“Oh, um, okay.” I dropped my hand to my side. “Uh, well, I-I’m sorry that I ran, uh, into you….”
“Oh, it’s fine, it’s fine! My little girl always does that to me whenever she’s excited….” She glanced me up and down. “Say, how old are you?”
You should never give your age out to strangers, Winston. I told myself quietly, but I almost trusted this lady. That was strange; I never trust anyone that I just met!
“Um, I’m ten.”
Her eyes lit up. “Really? My child’s also ten, and she’s been lookin' for a partner to go on her journey with. I think you’ll fit the bill.”
Okay, what? What’s with this woman? I run into her, we don’t even know each other’s name, and now she’s wanting me to become her daughter’s partner on a journey? Isn’t that a bit on the creepy side? Shouldn’t I feel scared and want to run away?
But I don’t feel scared. In fact, I like talking with her. She’s….. well, I don’t know. Safe feeling?
“Um, w-well, I’m Winston.” I’m not agreeing to anything yet.
“Oh! So sorry, Winston. I’m Rosemary White. Nice to meet ya!” She grabbed my hand and shook it. “So I guess it’s a deal?”
Her last name caught my attention. White? Like Touko White, the famous trainer from Unova? My last name was also White but I wasn’t related to Touko…. Were they? That would be so cool to know and travel with someone that’s related to Touko–
