This year we went to Abu Dhabi, little did I know that my whole perspective on love will change. I never believed in love at first sight, the kind of Romeo and Juliet or the rough and rugged love of Bonny and Clyde. The thing with love stories is that they are either Indian fiction or just there, I used to think that love is such a cliché you know are we all looking for the Jay-z's I will much rather have a binge day of my favourite snacks and fast food snuggled in bed with a good book.
All year my siblings and I look forward to our summer vacation, it was our downtime where all of us hang out and bond. My father always made choosing holidays exciting, our ever fun-loving dad makes a game out of most things. The sorting hat determines where the family goes each year with the lucky chosen family member picking a destination, this year it was my lucky year.
"Are you all ready" my dad said. " Yesssss!!!!" we all shouted, "Even you Sheikh da girman ka?" Said my mum.
"Well mama this is my first vacation in months and I need it" said Sheikh my older brother
"Ok Haady the sorting hat is all yours" said my dad
and that's how we ended up at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort in Abu Dhabi.I am one of 5 children in my family. Usman(Sheikh) being the eldest just started working at NCC, followed by me Hadiza (haady) about to start my masters in project management, then Mohammad in his last year at the university and lastly the twin girls Hudah and Husna our ss3 babies, all they care about is what to wear to prom *rme*.
The hardest part about family holidays was settling on the activities, a compromise was always the solution.
Our first week in Abu-Dhabi we settled on doing all the outdoor activities.
Saturday and Sunday were spent at a desert safari where we went quad biking, camel riding, sand surfing and lets not forget Sheikh attempt of belly dancing FYI it was horrific to watch. On Tuesday we spent the day on a boat cruise I for one stayed outside enjoying the breeze as most of the activities inside where not my thing, I watched the sunset which is one of my favorite things to do.
On Wednesday we went camping at the desert camp they had so many activities and it was so fun I even learnt how they traditionally roast lamb under the sand but the best part about the camping trip was the sunsets and the sunrise luckily for me we stayed there for two days.
Friday we all went down to Dubai because as Mama aka the shopaholic said "ba za ku hana ni abun da nake son yi ba "besides I was all for it I wanted to buy some abayas ( you can call me an abaya freak! I own about 50) and get a few bits and bob for my best friend Samira who is getting married in two weeks, so its like i killed two birds with one stone.
On Saturday and Sunday, we spent it going to museums and cultural palaces, so many souvenirs to be bought, it's never bad to learn about people's ways but everybody knew it was because Baba and I wanted to look at old architecture, art and sculptures, having the same interest as Baba always made it easy to manipulate plans. As most of the places offer food it became a win win situation with the rest of the crew or food mongers as they call themselves.
We've tagged Mondays as activity free day. Everyone does his/her own thing, which for me entailed a day in front of the television in my joggers and a shirt I stole for Sheikh.
The following day we went back to Dubai for two days because the twins fancied swimming with dolphins and Baba wanted to take Mama away for a romantic getaway at some fancy hotel (IKR! Wadannan tsofaffin har yanzu baa daina soyayya ba), Old love I tell you.
Friday we prayed at the Sheikh Zayed Mosque which left me gasping, the blending of the architecture of the minarets with the styles Mamluk, Ottoman and Fatimid show cased the beauty and art of the Islamic world. The blossoming talent behind the floral mosaics of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was breath-taking. The carving and sandblasting traditional Islamic designs of symmetry and repetition was just breath-taking not to mention the awe-inspiring carpets and the stunning ponds along the courtyard. Although the whole Mosque was scenic Spectacular sight! Splendid Architecture! Great Masterpiece! I can go on forever it was just so peaceful I was so blessed that we were able to visit on a Friday and be able to pray there.
The boys decided we have to go to Ferrari world "its a must!" They said. The twins were beyond themselves with excitement as they are into cars and roller coasters.
We, the kids, went for a test drive on the latest Ferrari and by the time we meet up Baba had buttered Mama enough to let the twins ride the Formula Rossa, the world's fastest roller-coaster, the gleam on their faces said it all.
Victory at last was the chant of all the five kids in the family Baba included. Lol
Formula Rossa was incredible but scary, I actually had tears at the end of the ride, in my defense it was fast ....lets just say that I was the butt of all the jokes. But I couldn't care less you see sometimes things happen for a reason , since Sheikh and Muhammad refused to sit with me I ended up sitting with a random stranger (amma yasha yaqushi da duka) lol.
After the ride was over I knew I owed the guy an apology, as I turned he smiled and said "matsoraciya"
All I could think was 'Oh sh*t.!'
I gasped and gaped openly as I observed the handsome man sitting next to me....(all thoughts of an apology forgotten)And before I could say anything he disappeared, and thats how I met 'AbuDhabi Crush'.
