Pearl ran through the busy streets, bustling with people with jobs to do and lives to live. Pearl, however, was attempting something quite special: escaping the prison she once called home. Perhaps I should start this tale at the beginning. It all began 5 years ago...

It was a normal, dreary summer afternoon - the kind you would much rather sleep through than engage in. Pearl sat immobile in her living room as her sisters played on the couch. New York City was busy as always, and Pearl's mother Rose was out shopping. At that fateful moment, a previously uneventful day yielded chaos and destruction. It all started when Amethyst, Pearl's childhood friend, knocked on the door.

"Hey loser. I'm off to the Kindergarten to steal some quartz. Wanna come?"

"You know I do, Amethyst," Pearl replied snazzily.

The two girls sprinted through the city to the Kindergarten, a rather large rock formation that was bursting with precious stones. Amethyst was in the middle of ravaging the ancient rock when suddenly, the police showed up! Amethyst was able to quickly run and hide, but Pearl was not so fortunate.

"Put your hands up, scoundrel!" The police officer bellowed.

Pearl complied and put her hands up. She was soon taken to court where she was quickly found guilty of damaging an ancient artifact and was sentenced to 9 years in prison. The young woman tried to stay optimistic, but deep down she knew her life as "Pearl" was over.

5 years later...

Pearl had been in solitary confinement for 5 years now. Her endless struggle was slowly becoming unbearable. She had to get out. Pearl was especially famous in her prison, so she had plenty of resources. That wouldn't be a problem. Lapis Lazuli, a fellow prisoner, had become particularly fond of Pearl and had endearingly given her the nickname "Punching Pearl." The two young criminals had agreed to work together in order to flawlessly pull off their escape.

The first step was to eliminate the guards. Easy. Lapis had convinced her girlfriend Jasper to distract the guard, Felicia, while she and Pearl ran outside into the prison yard. The next step in the heist was to scale the prison wall. This would not be as easy. Pearl was able to climb fairly well, but she refused to leave without Lapis. The blue haired girl was in the middle of her climb when a searchlight was pointed directly at her.

As guards pointed their weapons, Lapis screamed "Go on, Pearl! If you survive, my death will have been worth it."

The young woman could hardly bare to let her best friend die, but she knew what she had to do. As she saw the bullets fly, she mouthed the words "Thank you."

Pearl was out. Of course, she could no longer go by the name Pearl. As she ran through New York's streets, she decided on the name "Malachite Jones." Yes, Malachite Jones. Malachite desperately yelled, ready to begin her new life.
