It was Dan's first day at school today.
I hope he was alright.
He didn't tell me.

He hasn't talked to me before.

I don't think he's talked to anyone before.

I would love to hear his voice.

I bet it's beautiful.

I could hear loud music coming from his room.
Loud and screamy music.
It hurt my ears.
I willed it to stop.

The music stopped.
Eerie silence filled the first floor of our house.
I almost wish it hadn't stopped.
It was almost as if I could imagine Dan was not in the next room.
As if there was not only a thin layer of plaster and paper between us.

Not just a physical wall, of course.
Dan had so many barriers in his mind.
It didn't matter if you got past one.
There would still be so many more.

I heard the pitter patter of rain beginning to fall.
I stood up, and went to the window.
The sunlight had faded.
It had left grey in it's wake.

I heard Father scream from downstairs.
"Philip! You useless shit, why haven't you made dinner yet?"
I hung my head.
Made my way downstairs.

Dan came down just after me.
I think he pitied me.
I smiled at him.
He didn't smile back.
No surprises there.

Once my father was fed I went back up to my room.
I sat down on my bed.
Dan knocked on the door, and followed me in.
He sat down on my bed too.
This was new.

We ate in silence.
It was nice.
Once he was finished he left.

I turned off the light and lay down.
I stared at the roof in the dark.
I thought about Dan.
He's all I think about nowadays.

I think about his hands.
His eyes.
What his voice would be like.
His lips.

Daniel Howell fascinates me.

I've never heard a boy so silent.
