I'm standing outside the police station.
Father is inside, signing paperwork.
He comes outside, accompanied by a police officer.

"I don't what you were doing in the Deyes' house, Philip, but don't go back there."
The officer says to me.
I nod, scared.
Father grabs my wrist.

"I'm not finished with you."
He whispers in my ear.
"We're going home."
He says more audibly.

Once we're both sat in our rickety car, he turns to me in the back.
"Where the fuck is David?"
I paused.
Daniel.
His name is Daniel.

"I don't know. I'll find him soon, Father."
Father grips the steering wheel.
I see his knuckles go white.

"No you won't."
He hisses through clenched teeth.
"You're not leaving the fucking car until you tell me why you were in that man's house."

I hold my breath.
I don't know if I should dare.
"It's Louise's house, I don't know who he was."

Father pulls over onto the side of the road.
"Who the hell is Louise?"
I lower my head.
"My best friend."

He snorts.
"You have a friend who's a girl? Is my son a prissy kitty?"
His face suddenly freezes.
"Oi, that was the one with pink hair aye?"

I nod earnestly.
He remembers!

"You can't go to her house Philip, her family moved away after she died. Don't you remember, you fuckwit?"

I looked at Father in confusion.
"Louise isn't dead! I was talking to her earlier today, at her house!"
Father raised one eyebrow at me.
"What, is my prissy little son seeing dead people now? Wow, you're more fucked up than I thought."

He turned the car back on.
"Get out. Go find Damien."
I shakily open the car door.
Louise isn't dead.
He's a drunk.
He doesn't know what he's on about.

I talked to her earlier.
I saw Darcy.
She hugged me.
We watched a movie.
She's not dead.

Why didn't Dan acknowledge her when she walked home from school with us?
Why did she start talking to me less after we turned ten?
Why was that strange man in her house?

Where did she go after he came in?

What happened to my best friend?

I cover my face.
Sit down on the damp grass and hug my knees to my chest.
"Louise? Where are you?" I whimper.
I begin to cry.

I feel someone tap me on the back.
I turn around.

It's Louise.
