I saw Asher about fifty metres ahead. I noticed he was walking more like a girl and less like he had a rash on his foo foo. I slowed down and beeped the horn. He jumped and just about fell over. I laughed and sped away as he stuck up him middle finger just like I would. Maybe we were better than being each other than we thought.
I grinned again and turned into the school parking lot. Luckily Asher told where he and friends parked. Otherwise I would have had no clue. I pulled into a spot in front of Asher's friends.
"Ash!" Peter, I think, called out. I stepped out of the car and locked it.
"Hey," I said and walked over to them. That was when a pair of smooth, nice smelling hands appeared from behind and covered my eyes.
"Guess who!" a shrill, girl voice said.
"Uh – who?"
The girl took her hands away and spun me around. Oh no. It was Brianna Tully, Asher's girlfriend. I'd completely forgotten about her!
"Oh . . . hey," I said awkwardly. I saw her eyes close as she started to lean in. "Ah – hold that thought, I just need to go to the bathroom."
She pulled back and raised her eyebrows. "Are you serious?"
"Um, yeah, sorry. Be right back." I hurried off in the direction of the male bathroom. Once I was in there, I sent Asher a text: Brianna.
His reply came within seconds: Oh shit. Where are you?
Me: The bathroom. Do you want to meet?
Him: No too risky. Please, could do this for me?
Me: You want me to pretend to be her girlfriend?
Him: You are her girlfriend, remember? We said do everything the other would do.
I groaned. He was right. That was the deal. We promised not to mess up each other's life, which meant, unfortunately for me, I have to date a girl.
Me: Fine. But you owe me
Him: thank you thank you thank you thank you
I switched off the phone and left the bathroom.
Luckily the bell went before I made it back to the group. I was pretty sure Asher had math first up but I took out his timetable just to be certain. Throughout my short journey to the third floor where Asher's math class was, I was greeting by a number of people who I'd never even seen before. Just goes to show how much I actually payed attention to the rest of the people in my grade.
I waved or smiled back to them all, making note of how much I liked the feeling of being known. It was strange but very refreshing. Like I was looking at the world through a new pair of eyes. Well, I thought smiling, I was.
I arrived at room 314 now and I headed straight for the back of the room, knowing it's where Asher sat. Less than a minute later, Peter walked in and took the seat beside me.
"Dude, you alright?" He looked genuinely concerned.
"Uh . . . yes, I'm fine."
"You sure? You seemed a little frigid around Brianna this morning."
"Oh, really? No, it's fine. I just felt kinda weird is all."
He nodded and the teacher walked in. I knew that while I was in extension math, Asher was in basic so this class was going to be a breeze. I'd have to work on his study, though, if I wanted him to pass my class. Luckily I didn't have math until tomorrow.
I was right. Everything the teacher said I'd already covered several times and was quite confident with it. I even helped Peter on a few things. Though, I made sure I put down at least two wrong answers on the worksheet so it didn't look like I cheated.
"You're getting good at that," Peter said after class ended.
"I am?"
"It looks like it. I mean, you didn't ask any questions today."
"Right. I don't know, I guess that stuff is easier for me to understand."
He raised one eyebrow. "We've been working on that all semester and you haven't got one question right until now."
"Oh." Okay, I needed to be stupider.
"Dude, did you study?"
"Pfft, no. Studying is lame." What I just said was lame but I couldn't think of anything else to say. Thankfully he changed the subject.
"Hey, you wanna go to Alfie's tonight? His brother's bringing the goods." By the way he was looking at me, I guessed 'the goods' meant drugs.
"Oh, man, that sounds like fun but I've actually got to help my dad with . . . um, with some stuff at home." I shot him an apologetic smile.
"Geez, you are being weird today," he snickered. "Whatever, I'll send you pictures."
With that, he walked off, leaving me at Asher's chemistry class room.
--
Brianna was waiting for me when the bell went.
"Hey, Ashie!" She said and wrapped her arms around my neck. I managed to hide my look of utter disgust at that name but I couldn't stop the waves of internal cringing. How Asher liked her, I have no idea. She was a classic bimbo; barbie doll looks, no brains, convinced she was in love with the football captain.
As she leant in to give me a kiss, I noticed Asher in my peripheral vision, shooting me a pleading look. I swallowed, shut my eyes and tried not to think about it as her lips touched mine. It took me everything to not pull back but I sucked it up and returned the kiss.
I'd never actually kissed anyone before so I had no idea what I was doing. It seemed to be OK though as Brianna didn't protest.
Eventually, after what seemed like forever, she pulled away. That was possibly the weirdest experience of my life – well second, next to waking up to find I had a penis.
I'd always dreamt of what my first would be like and let me tell you, I never ever imagined it would be in the school corridor, after chemistry class with a girl!
I tried to smile after my momentary shock. I don't think it seemed very genuine as she started to frown.
"What's wrong?" She asked, clearly scared that I didn't approve of her kiss. Which I did not.
"Oh, nothing. Just glad to see you." I smiled again and I think I did a better job as she grinned.
"Aw, baby," she said and took my hand in hers. "Let's go to lunch."
As we walked, I noticed Asher's expression. He looked very grateful all the while trying not to laugh. That was probably true, I'm sure I looked quite awkward during that whole thing.
