Present Day

"Cody, wake up or you'll be late for school!" shouted a woman along with loud banging against his door.

Underneath a pillow, an eye opens to reveal a honey brown color. "I'm awake, Ms. Elias. I'll be down in a minute!" he shouted in a muffle.

Slowly sliding out of bed, he was startled awake when he steps on something that moved. Cody jumped about two feet in the air and looks at what he stepped on, now wide awake. Finding it was Ms. Elias's pet iguana Izzy.

"Really, Izzy? I thought I put you in your tank." Cody said to the giant reptile. The female reptile just stares at him with lazy eyes. "Ugh." he said with an eye roll. He bends down and picks up the reptile. The creature wasn't that heavy but she did squirm a lot when she didn't want to be held. This was one of those moments.

The large reptile squirmed and sank her claws into his skin. She wrapped her tail around his arm and tried to throw herself out of his arms. "Stop squirming! I'm trying to put you in your damn home!" Cody yelled as he practically stuffs the iguana in her tank. Only for Izzy to smack him with her tail, and she runs out of the room.

"Ms. Elias, Izzy's going down the stairs moody again!" Cody called out as he puts on a black t-shirt and changes into a pair of blue jeans.

"Thank you for the warning!" Ms. Elias called back.

Cody couldn't help but laugh at her response. He has known Ms. Elias for nearly a year and she is like a sister to him than a foster mother. For five years, Cody has been in the foster care system. His parents passed away in a home invasion. Cody was there when it happened, hiding in the basement and in a dark corner. That was where the police had found him.

His tarp-covered parents still haunted his dreams. Only twelve at the time, it was truly horrifying to see his parents dead.

Taking in a deep breath, Cody looks at himself through the mirror. He had long, shaggy brown hair, a strong jaw, and high cheekbones. His eyes were the same as his father's while he had his mother's hair. Cody wished he didn't look so much like his mother. It makes it harder to cope.

After changing clothes and packing his books in to his backpack, he leaves his room and heads downstairs. The hallway was small with three doors. One was to a bathroom, the other was to Ms. Elias's room, and the last was his bedroom. There was another bedroom and it was downstairs.

Cody reached the bottom step and had to jump over a cranky Izzy who slept on it. He could hear her snores that resembled growls. Valuing unbruised ankles, he silently walks to the kitchen.

He was greeted with the smell of scrambled eggs and bacon. A very casual meal in the household. He sits down in a table that was beside the kitchen counter. "No pancakes? Usually you go for the full bed and breakfast course." Cody joked. He grabs a green apple and takes a bite.

"We're out of the pancake mix. Either way, you need a good meal for school." said Ms. Elias. When Cody looked up at her, he felt his heart swell at the sight.

Ms. Elias wore a light purple, sleeveless dress that stopped at her knees. Her skin was a fair pale with freckles dazzling her cheeks. Short black hair reached the middle of her neck, revealing a butterfly tattoo in the center of back of her neck. Beautiful green eyes stared down at the scrambled eggs she was cooking. Despite being 30, she looked at least 25.
