Cody
"Is this for real!?" Michaela exclaimed as she stared at the piece of paper. She laid on Cody's bed and held his inheritance sheet high above her head. Her legs were extended above her head, and she starts kicking like an excited little kid. "You are loaded!" she yelled excitedly.
Despite how amusing it was seeing his best friend all excited, Cody couldn't help but be confused. He just found out he was going to inherit a million dollars. And he never even knew it. Thoughts ran through Cody's head as he tries to figure out how his father got so much money.
Savings? Inheritance from his parents? Cody thought but couldn't figure out. Gears turned in his head and it started to give him a headache. This was more confusing than him.
"I won't be getting the money till I'm eighteen so don't get too excited." Cody said as he snatches the paper from Michaela. "And your birthday is in a couple of months!" Michaela reminded him. Rolling his eyes at her, Cody couldn't stop himself from laughing. But it stopped quickly. "I still don't know if I should believe this Michael guy. For all I know this is some weirdo wanting the money my father gave me." he said.
That man's voice is also very similar to that burglar, Cody thought. Anger started to sizzle in his bones. He didn't know if Michael was one of the burglars, but he knew that he was there. That voice was so familiar. The same as the leader . . .
The first thing Cody sees is the door bursting open. The bang made him scream in fright as he drops his glass of water. Water and glass spread all over the floor. Shards of glass cut his feet but that wasn't important.
"DOWN ON THE FUCKING GROUND!" screamed the first person to burst through the door. Four more men came in after him. Guns were raised and aiming at Cody and his mother.
Cody's mother quickly pushes Cody behind her. He could feel her shaking in fear but refused to show it. "Who are you!? What are you doing?!" she demanded in a forced tone, trying to be brave. Cody peeks from behind and stares at the large man with the ski mask. He recognized the gun as the kind his dad uses.
"Get down on the ground!" the man ordered again. He was now just a few feet away from Cody's mother. The gun was so close to her face.
"Don't hurt my mom!" Cody screamed. He ran in front of his mom and stood in front of the gun. "My dad is a police officer! You'll get arrested for this!" he yelled.
Through the thick layer of black wool, the man glared at Cody with his cold eyes. He changes his aim and aims the gun at Cody's face. "Like I care." the man sneered.
Shots were fired from behind Cody. He ducks when bullets hit pictures on the wall and glass flew everywhere. "GET AWAY FROM MY FAMILY!" screamed Cody's father.
Arms wrapped around Cody, and he was carried away. He caught a glimpse of his father standing there with his gun. A strong look was on his face as he faced the intruders. Cody wished he said something as his mother quickly guided him away. Bullets flew over their head as they turned down the hallway.
Shouts from his father and the intruders echoed through the air. Cody wanted to go back to help but his mom held a tight grip on his shirt. He was led to the basement door, and his mom opened it up quietly. "Go downstairs and hide. Don't make a sound." she ordered in a hushed tone. "What about you?" Cody asked scared; he couldn't hear his father's voice anymore. "I'll be right down. Do not make a sound and do not come out till me or your father come to get you." his mother ordered before lightly pushing Cody down the basement stairs.
The door shut behind him but he doesn't turn back. He follows his mother's orders and silently runs downstairs. The creaks in the stairs were small and couldn't be heard over the gunshots. Screams from his mother sprung tears from his eyes.
Cody couldn't see anything in the basement. The smell of rotting walls and the drips of leaking water was overwhelming. He takes in a deep breath and walks to the back right corner. Pressing his back against the wall, he slowly slips down to the floor.
More gunshots were fired, and Cody heard his mother scream. He swears he heard a thump right above him. Please let that be one of the intruders, Cody thought. He hides his face in his knees and silently begs for this nightmare to end.
It only felt like moments went by when the basement door opens. Picking up his head, Cody saw a beam of light peering down the stairs. He waited to hear his father or mother but dreads that it maybe one of the intruders. Loud footsteps walked down the stairs and were followed with another pair of footsteps.
Fear shakes him to the bone as he waits. Cody couldn't blink as he prepares to see who was walking downstairs.
"Plymouth Police Department, is anyone down here?" demanded man with a strong voice. Cody didn't move, afraid that the person could be one of the intruders pretending to be a cop. He bites his bottom lip and keeps himself quiet.
Two figures stepped down from the staircase. They flashed their flashlights around the room. Cody hopes that they skim passed him but his hopes die immediately. Two flashlights shine on his curled up form. Cody grunts and hides away from the bright light.
"Are you Cody Winters?" asked the same man with the strong voice.
Picking up his head, Cody stares up at two real police officers. They were both well built but aged to their middle years. "Yes?" Cody said unsurely.
The cops exchange looks before the cop on the left got on his knees and holds his hand out to Cody. "I'm sorry, son. But your parents are gone." he said solemnly.
"Cody?"
Michaela's voice woke him from his daze. He blinks away the memory and saw she was looking at him in worry. "Sorry. Just spaced out." Cody said; straightening up his posture.
He could tell she didn't believe him because she gives him that look. "Don't give me the Look!" Cody whined like a little kid. "Oh I'll keep giving you the look till you tell me what you are hiding!" Michaela said as she literally pounces on him. Her weight knocked him backwards, and the chair gave out from under them.
Both letting out yelps, Michaela and Cody tumble to the floor. It knocked the breath out of the both of them.
"I thought I told you that this chair can be slippery." Cody groaned. He was having trouble breathing because Michaela was on his chest. "I forgot." Michaela said with a grunt. She pushes herself up with her arms but doesn't get up right away.
The two realize how close they were to one another. Their eyes connect and stood still. Cody could feel her nose brush his own. He could smell her scent that consisted of jasmine and a hint of banana.
Slowly, Michaela leans in till their lips were just inches away. Her breath danced on his lips. "M-Michaela," he stuttered.
"Well ain't this something?" spoke that cursed voice of Adrian.
Michaela and Cody turn their heads to the window. They discover Adrian sitting on the windowsill with a knife in his hand. He looked both amused and irked at the sight that was in front of him.
"Fuck my life." Cody said.
