Once upon a time
We were in love.
We knew it for a year
Before the stream split at a fork.
But it's still the same stream
And I knew it
I told you again
And we enjoyed the city.

And when I asked
Then you said yes
And we were holding hands.

And when I left
I expected to come back to you
But I couldn't see your face in
An empty crowd.
I called you
You didn't answer.
I texted
With no reply.
And I didn't know I'd leave so soon.
Neither did you
But honestly?

Your reaction
That wasn't a reaction
That's the look you give a stranger on the train.
That isn't a reaction.
I left.

I left
And I left kicking and screaming
Aware of the chains you didn't know you had on me,
And I tried to brush them off
But they're chains.
They're chains that tighten every day you're away until
You cut them off.
And you walked away
You didn't give me another word.

I have imprints on my arms.
My wrists,
My palms,
My ankles
It feels weird to breathe without them on my neck
And why do
I wish
They're
Still there?

I have wings on my back
They're flecked with gray and
The colour of memories dead.
The feather tips blur
And burn endlessly
Remnants of your curse
Remnants of my scars
Remnants of a heart we once shared.

She was there.
She stood in the backdrop
She wasn't the main character
She wasn't really there
But I could only see her light.

It's been merely
Merely
A month
And I can't remember how we met.
She has captivated me
I'm lost in her smile
And it's early to say
But my scars
My splotches of hurt,
It's all fading.
