*Present day*

"Rise and shine! It's a beautiful day!" A voice chirped into my ear. I snapped my eyes open to see the bright violet eyes of my best, and only, friend staring down at me.

"Go away Athena." I groaned as I curled up farther into my navy blankets. Suddenly I felt cold air rush over my bare skin as my blankets were ripped off of my body. I shot up into a sitting position as I glared Athena down. "Don't you test me woman." I snarled.

"You never were a morning person." Athena sighed. "But seriously, you need to get up. Today is the start of hell week." Ah yes, hell week. Hell week was the true beginning as a hunter's training. At the age of 12 potential hunters begin learning the basics, such as different types of weapons and so on. But the sixth year of being in the academy is when things begin to get serious. The trainees have to go through a series of trials to see if they have what it takes to graduate. Not everyone survives, but it's a price we all must pay if we fail. There are three trials in total, but nobody knows what they are. Those who have passed them are not allowed to tell the next generation of hunters, for that would give an unfair advantage.

I finally pulled myself out of bed and began searching through my clothes. I wasn't going to bother with a shower this morning because I would soon become sweaty again anyways. I grabbed out a dark purple tank top, and a pair of leggings so I would be comfortable in training. I finally grabbed my black pair of combat boots. I quickly changed and walked into the bathroom that Athena and I shared. Athena was standing at the sink running a brush through her hair. I was alway jealous of her looks. With her fair skin, violet eyes, and strawberry blonde hair, she could stop anybody in their tracks. And while she was as beautiful as a goddess, I was just average. I had long dark brown hair that was almost black, and chocolate brown eyes to match. While Athena said she was jealous of how my skin was always a golden tan, there was no way I could ever compare to her. When I first met Athena, I wanted nothing to do with her. But she had other plans.

*Flashback to 12 years old*

"Hey! Hey Evelyn wait up!." That girl was still following me. Ever since I was knocked down on the training mat and she helped me up, she wouldn't let me out of her sights.

"Can't you see I don't want to talk to you?" I grumbled. Even at my rude remark, the girl kept smiling at me. Before I could keep walking, the girl grabbed my arm pulling me towards her.

"Well I want to talk to you." She grinned. "My names Athena."

"Well hi Athena, now bye Athena." I said and began to walk away.

"I don't think so!" She began and grabbed me once again. "You're always alone, so I thought I would come and talk to you."

"I'm alone because I choose to be." I grumbled. In the past other kids have approached me trying to be social. But every time they did, I always pushed them away. I didn't have time for distractions such as friendships. In the end they would leave me, and in the end I would be alone once again. "I don't want friends Athena, don't you get it."

"Don't lie to me." This comment made me look her dead in the eyes. I couldn't respond to what she just said. "I can see it in your eyes. It isn't that you don't want friends, but you're scared that they will abandon you." She gave me a soft smile. But the smile she gave showed no sign of pity or sadness. It showed determination. "Now come on!" She grinned at me. "I have this really cool book on hunters that my mom gave me! You can come read it with me if you want." I looked at the ground for a moment thinking of what I should say. I might regret this later, but I had a feeling I could trust Athena.

"Okay." I replied giving the slightest smile. "That sounds cool."

*Present time*

I never regretted following Athena that day. She became a sister to me; she became my family.
