Unit 3 Present continuous (I am doing) atau present simple (I do)

sebelumnya pelajari unit 1 dan 2 terlebih dahulu _

a) perhatikan dan bandingkan setiap contoh.

present continuous (I am doing)
gunakan present continuous untuk berbicara tentang sesuatu yang sedang terjadi pada saat atau di waktu sekitar pembicaraan.

present simple (I do)
gunakan present simple untuk berbicara tentang sesuatu dalam keadaan general atau sesuatu yang terjadi secara berulang-ulang

contoh
present continuous
1) the kettle is boiling. Can you turn it off, please?

2) Listen to those people. What language are they speaking ?

3) Silvia is in Britain for three months. She's learning English.

bandingkan

present simple
1) Water boils at 100 degrees centigrade.

2) Excuse me, do you speak English ?

3) Most people learn to swim when they are children.

gunakan present continuous untuk situasi sementara :
-I'm living with some friends until I can find a flat.
-that machine isn't working. It broke down this morning.

sedangkan penggunaan present simple untuk situasi permanen :
-My parent live in London. They have been there for 20 years.
-That machine doesn't work. It hasn't work for years.

b) beberapa kata kerja hanya digunakan dalam simple tenses. contohnya, kalian tidak bisa mengatakan 'I am knowing'. Kalian hanya bisa mengatakan 'I know'. Dibawah ini beberapa daftar kata kerja yang tidak biasa digunakan dalam continuous tenses (namun masih terdapat pengecualian).

prefer              hate           hear
have (ketika memiliki arti 'mempunyai (possess)')
think (ketika memiliki arti 'percaya (believe)' )
know        suppose      remember
realise      mean                forget
believe     understand     steem

contoh :
-Do you like London ? (not 'are you liking?)
-He doesn't understand. (not 'he isn't understanding')
-these shoes belong to me (not 'are belonging')
-what do you think Tom will do ? (berarti 'what do you believe he will do?')
but : What are you thinking about ? (berarti 'what is going on in your mind?)
