Pete's POV
"Ugh." I groaned, unwillingly swimming back into consciousness. I shielded my eyes from the blinding sun poking through the trees. I tried to sit up, but everything hurt. With all my strength and willpower, I climbed to my feet.
"Where am I?" I wondered. Last night was all a big blur, the hospital, the van, those kids. I must have blacked out here. All I knew now that I was alone, tired, and hungry.
There was an apple tree close to me, so I walked over and picked a fresh red apple. I took a large bite out of it and immediately knew something was wrong. Looking down at where I bit, I realized that the inside of the apple was soft like a overripe peach and blood red. All of a sudden, I felt sick to my stomach. I keeled over on the ground and threw up what little of the apple I had eaten. A large red and black snake made its way over to me and began circling the spot where I just threw up. Gross.
I dared not to move, not knowing if the snake was poisonous or not and leaning more towards the poisonous side. After a few minutes, the snake got bored and left. I quickly got out of there as fast as I could, following the path cut into the trees.
The dirt path shifted to a gravel road several miles down. That hopefully meant that there were people close by. I was right. The gravel led me to a small parking lot which was empty except for three or four cars, which were all empty. Where was everyone?
I wandered aimlessly for a few minutes, completely lost on what to do now. I just want to go home, is that too much to ask? There were footsteps echoing behind me, hoping to pass me unnoticed. I spun around to see a woman and a small girl in a glittery pink dress quickly walking to one of the cars.
"Help." I groaned, shuffling towards them.
"Mommy I'm scared." the little girl whimpered, cowering behind her mother.
"It's okay, Katie." The woman reassured her daughter. "Stay back." She glared at me.
"P-please. Help me." I responded.
"Stay back." She growled, reaching for her purse. I kept walking towards her. "I'm warning you." She pulled something small out of her bag. I kept walking. She pointed a small can at me and sprayed the contents right in my face. It stung like no tomorrow.
"Aaaagggghhhh" I screamed. I collapsed to the pavement in pain. Whatever she sprayed me with, it stung like a bitch. Regardless, I had just lost my only hope of safety, which meant I had to keep searching.
I scrambled back to my feet and kept going down the road. Soon enough, there was a large red truck speeding toward me. I waved it down to find a familiar face in the passenger seat. Patrick.
"Hey stranger" He smiled.
"Hey." I grinned, looking behind him to see Joe and Andy in the back.
"Climb in back, the others are there." Patrick suggested. Without another thought, I joined the two if them in the bed of the truck.
"Thanks." I told Andy, who helped me in.
"No problem." He replied, offering me one of the jugs of water in back with us. I gladly accepted it.
Suddenly, the truck came to a halt in the same parking lot that I was just in.
"What are we doing here?" Joe asked.
"I dunno." I shrugged, peering over the side. Patrick was talking to a red-haired girl in the same bloody and dirty condition as us.
"Climb in back." I heard him tell her. She limped over to the side of the truck and we helped her in.
"Hey Jace." Joe spoke up.
"Hey" She smiled, sliding up towards the front of the truck near Patrick. I saw him whisper something in her ear, but I couldn't make out what it was. 'Could they be a thing?' I wondered.
I grabbed the jug of water that Andy gave me and offered it to Jasey once we got back on the road, which she gladly accepted. "Thanks." She smiled and took a large gulp of the water.
I looked down and noticed that her jacket was hastily tied around her right leg and patched with blood. "How did you do that?" I asked.
"One of those kids got me." She explained.
"Ah." I responded. "Well I have a message for them." I lifted up both my arms and stuck up both middle fingers as high as I could.
"Classy Wentz." She laughed.
Suddenly, the truck took a sharp turn and caught is off guard, sending Jasey and Andy tumbling forward.
"Ow" Jasey groaned.
"What the hell?" Andy looked around. We were parked in front of a hospital.
"What's going..." My thought was cut short once I looked inside the truck. Patrick had turned around facing us, his eyes were glowing bright yellow and he was screaming at us. "Guys..." I grabbed the three of them. "We got to get out of here. Now!"
The four of us scrambled out of the truck and took off on a mad dash to the hospital we were parked in front of. I made the stupid decision of looking back. Patrick was right behind us, and he didn't look friendly at all.
'Pat' I thought. 'What did they do to you?'
