The months passed by quickly, Gryffindor was in the lead to win the Quidditch Cup with James as their captain, teachers were assigning fifth years increasingly large piles of homework in preparation for O.W.L.'s, and Christmas was just around the corner. Sirius longly thought of putting his name on the 'staton at Hogwarts' list, but deep down he knew that wasn't an option. He would have to go home eventually, and the longer he delayed that, the angrier his parents would get.
Sirius felt a knot forming in his stomach the whole train ride home. His friends, especially Remus, kept glancing at him nervously. As they slowed to a stop, Sirius lightly squeezed Remus' hand while James and Peter weren't looking, trying to communicate with him that he would be okay. Sirius then said his goodbyes before leaving the compartment to find his family. To his surprise, Regulus was standing right outside the compartment door.
"Sirius... I'm sorry" he said. "I've been an awful brother."
     "What're you talking about?"
"I told mum and dad about your prank on those Slytherins, and a ton of other stuff... they're gonna be so mad at you and it's all my fault..."
"Listen, Reg" said Sirius softly, "they'd be mad at me whether you told them or not. They're always mad at me. Don't beat yourself up over it." Regulus didn't look completely convinced, but he didn't argue.
The Blacks were oddly silent the first few days of Christmas. They didn't scream at Sirius, or even interact with him outside of meals, during which they never mentioned his presence unless they were asking him to pass something across the table. Sirius was rather enjoying this; it was preferable to his usual treatment at home. He spent his time alone in his room or perhaps talking with Regulus.
Christmas Eve Night, as Sirius was sitting in his room, he pulled out the two-way mirror that allowed him to talk to James. It was risky... but he knew his parents would both be downstairs, and he would only talk to James for a minute... it would be fine.
"Hey mate!" James exclaimed when he answered the mirror.
"Hey! Listen, I can only talk for a minute, I just wanted to say Happy Christmas!"
"Why thank you" replied James, batting his eyelashes.
"But of course deer" Sirius said dramatically. "So how has your — "
     "SIRIUS ORION BLACK!"
