When Sirius awoke the next morning, it took him a while to recall all the events from the previous night. Once he did, he felt sick to his stomach. Just like that, he had made a decision that was so... permanent. Things with his family would never be the same again. Not that he cared about his parents, but Regulus... Sirius couldn't bear the thought of abandoning him.
"You okay, mate?" asked James, startling Sirius.
"Oh, yeah, I'm fine," replied Sirius, earning him a doubtful look from James.
"Sirius, you came here in the middle of the night sobbing... it seems like there's something you might need to talk about."
"Okay, okay. Well, last night, my parents um... you know... used their favorite spell, but it missed me and hit Regulus instead. So I fought them back and stunned them and I had to leave. I mean, I had no choice... right? I did the right thing, didn't I?"
"Of course you did Sirius, how could that have been wrong?"
"I just... I left Regulus all alone there. All alone..." Sirius began to cry again. James wrapped his arms around Sirius and hugged him like a brother.
"I know this is hard, but you absolutely made the right decision. Your parents aren't going to hurt Regulus, okay? He never does anything they consider rebellious; he'll be okay."
"That's the other thing," sniffled Sirius. "He does what they want... what if he joins the Death Eaters? What if he goes bad and I'm not there to stop him?"
"I..." James began to attempt a reply to such a difficult question, but, to his relief, he was interrupted by his mother opening the door.
"Thought you two might want some breakfast," she said kindly, bringing in some tea while Mr. Potter trailed behind with a tray of food.
"Thank you," Sirius replied politely, trying to pull himself together.
"Just let us know if we can do anything else for you. Anything at all," said Mr. Potter.
Once they exited the room, Sirius bursted into a fresh round of tears. James hugged his best friend, and through muffled sobs, heard the words,
"Your parents are so nice." James felt his heart break for Sirius more than it already had. He also felt a sense of determination form – determination to show Sirius what a real family could feel like. Determination to help his best friend... his brother.
