Sirius lay in a crumpled heap on the ground, feeling powerless and defeated. Shame shivered through his sore body. He was supposed to be a Gryffindor, brave and fearless, but he was filled with terror. If his friends saw him like this... Sirius' stomach dropped. James had seen him like this. The mirror connection was still on when Sirius' mother came in. That meant that James knew... An abrupt knock on the door interrupted Sirius' anxious thoughts.
To his relief, it was not his parents or Kreacher, but Regulus who walked in.
"Are you okay?" the small fifteen year old asked, his voice quiet and his eyes wide with shock. Sirius struggled to sit up against his bed and gave Regulus a small nod. "No you're not... I feel like this is my fault."
"Don't be stupid, of course it's not," Sirius said angrily, his voice hoarse from screaming. "What are you doing in here anyways?"
"Fine, I'll just leave then."
Sirius watched Regulus exit and immediately regretted his outburst. Regulus was the only one in the house that cared about Sirius at all, and he had snapped at him.
For the remaining week before term began again, Sirius stayed in his room almost all day. He only left to eat with his family (they would be furious if he didn't) and use the bathroom, and he never talked to anyone. A couple of nights, Regulus snuck into Sirius' room, but they never talked much for fear of waking up their parents.
When the time finally came to return to Hogwarts, Sirius was in the best mood he had been in for weeks. He hugged all his friends and gave them hugely cheerful greetings. When Sirius hugged James, James hugged him extra tight — how could he not, after what he had seen? James was just happy to see that Sirius was alright. When they had a moment alone, James muttered,
"Listen... we don't have to talk about what I saw happen over break if you don't want to, but I'm just telling you that if you want to stay at my house you can for as long as you'd like..." A flurry of emotion passed over Sirius' face. He gave a curt nod in reply before immediately walking away and starting a game of Gobstones with Peter. James sighed. He couldn't stand the thought of Sirius being tortured ever again. James would do anything to get Sirius out of that toxic household.
Sorry this update is so short but it's more of a transition chapter. A lot of drama between the Marauders is coming soon so stay posted for the next update!
