I closed my eyes, and felt Emma's heavy weight on my back. Lily was also holding on. We seemed to fall forever, with air rushing past us. I instinctively got into a diving position, and held my breath.
Finally, we slammed into the water. I took most of the hit- since both Lily and Emma were holding onto me. It felt like I just fell from the sky onto a brick wall.
I was so disoriented, that I just slowly sank down into the water. I saw Emma and Lily paddle to the surface, calling out my name. I tried to move, but I couldn't. It was clear now, as I tumbled down farther and farther, that I was going to die. My air was running out...
This isn't such a bad way to die, I thought. I watched the beautiful ripples of the sunny waters, and a few fish swam around me. Not a bad way at all.
At least Emma and Lily are ok, I thought. They can finish the journey, and they can be the heroes. I'm no hero. I'm the sacrifice, the one who helps the true heroes.
I started to close my eyes, and let the lake swallow me. My last thought still held in my brain as my eyes darkened, and my air ran out.
I'm the sacrifice.
