You've got a hold on me
Don't even know your power
I stand a hundred feet
But I fall when I'm around youBethany hates herself, well not necessarily "hates herself", but she doesn't like the girl she is when he's around. She becomes some weak, naive little girl that hangs on to every word he says. She buys into the false hope that his pretty words feed to her. She melts into his touches and gets consumed by his stare. She jumps and falls with no hesitation but he's never there to catch her.
Show me an open door
Then you go and slam it on me
I can't take anymore
I'm saying babyPlease have mercy on me
Take it easy on my heart
Even though you don't mean to hurt me
You keep tearing me apart
Would please have mercy, mercy on my heartShe knows he cares about her, that much has always been evident, but he just doesn't see that she's in love with him, hopelessly and completely in love with him. He doesn't see that every time he pulls her in to cuddle while they watch a movie, she's waiting for him to kiss her. He doesn't see that every time he calls her to rant about his current girlfriend, she's waiting for him to realize that she's the one he should be with. He doesn't see the hurt in her eyes when he brings a new brunette around. He doesn't know the power he has over her heart. He doesn't know that she wishes that he would just leave her alone so that she can move on with her life and regain control over her own heart.
I'd drive through the night
Just to be near you baby
Heart open, testified
Tell me that I'm not crazy
I'm not asking for a lot
Just that you're honest with me
My pride is all I gotShe drops everything when he calls her at midnight. She just got back from Korea and she was in desperate need of sleep, but she hops in her car when he says he needs to see her. She runs into his arms on his doorstep where he's waiting for her. His eyes are bloodshot and he looks like he hasn't slept in days. He tells her about his fight with his current girlfriend. He talks about how he thinks he's found the one and no matter how much that stings, she can't leave him. She stays and listens until sunrise, when he says he's too tired to move from the couch and he begs her to stay with him. She does. Their limbs are tangled together under a thin throw blanket. He sleeps peacefully, she's wide awake listening to his heartbeat.
She stays despite his confessions the night before. She stays because she can feel deep down that there's something there between them. She knows she's not crazy. She can see it in his eyes that he feels the same electricity coursing through his veins when they touch. She can hear it in his voice when he tells her that she's beautiful. She's not crazy, right? She can't be.
Would you please have mercy on me
I'm a puppet on your strings
And even though you got good intentions
I need you to set me free
Would you please have mercy, mercy on my heartConsuming all the air inside my lungs
Ripping all the skin from off my bones
I'm prepared to sacrifice my life
I would gladly do it twiceHer heart aches as she watches him dance with her. They glide effortlessly across the dance floor, both grinning from ear to ear. His eyes are sparkling with admiration for the beautiful girl he gets to call his. She can't take her eyes off of them even as she feels the tears start to spill over.
She can't take it anymore. She doesn't want to be controlled by how this man makes her feel. He will never love her and she needs to accept that. He doesn't know that he's been hurting her for years and he can't let go of power that he doesn't know he has. She's the only one who can take that power back. She's the only one who needs to have mercy on her heart. So she does.
She doesn't look back as she leaves the party, so she doesn't see him search for her as their favorite song plays in the background. She doesn't see the hurt in his eyes as he reads the letter she leaves with the waiter. She doesn't know that her goodbye note made him realize what she's always wanted him to realize. He's hopelessly and completely in love with her too.

Hey, so I should have put up a new chapter of Waiting Game today, but I wanted to fix a few things first. It'll be up soon.
This was an idea I got while I was listening to Shawn Mendes' new album on spotify. I'll be honest, I've never really listened to his music, but a friend suggested I listen to his new album and this song instantly became a favorite and sparked the idea for this little oneshot. Anyway, I put the video to the song up top, so you should definitely give it a listen.
I hope you guys enjoyed this. Let me know what you think. XO.
