Chapter Thirty

Rhea walks over to us, her gait so elegant that it looks like she's floating. Her soft grey dress billows out around her as she walks, reminding me of all the cliche Hollywood depictions of angels. She smiles a celestial smile at me. "I heard you were looking for me."

"Me?" I blink, shocked speechless that she actually knew of my intentions, and she nods. "Oh. Well. Yeah."

Geez Evie, way to elaborate. That's definitely the best way to get her on your side.

"Why?"

I glance up at Hades, at a loss for words. "Um..." I lower my voice to a whisper. "How do I answer that without sounding petty or childish?"

He shakes his head with a small smile. "You don't need to respond. She knows."

"She does?" I look over at Rhea, and this time I don't miss the twinkle in the brunette woman's forest-green eyes. "Oh. She knows."

"Of course I know." Rhea stops in front of Hades and I, seemingly unaware that she's commanding all of our attention, or that Spencer, Selene and Axel are standing off to the side with slack-jawed expressions of awe. She studies me, and I feel strangely naked under her piercing gaze; it feels like she can see right through me, like my defenses are completely transparent and she can see all my internal thoughts and feelings. She finally turns to Hades, her expression softening. "My son. What has happened?"

"I'm not sure I'm the person you should be asking that." He replies coolly. I bite back a smile. He sounds like a petulant child trying to avoid being told off.

I know the world is close to ending and all, but can I just take a moment to laugh hysterically at his expression, because oh my god.

"That might be true, but you always did seem to favour logicality more than your brothers when it came to explaining situations."

Hades smiles minutely. "I think you will find that logicality is unable to explain any single part of this situation."

Poseidon's eyes narrow down to slits, and he splutters, apparently unable to hold himself back anymore. "I think you will find the explanation is quite simple brother; so simple, in fact, that logicality does not even need to come into question."

Rhea turns around, arching a finely tuned eyebrow at him. "Is that so? Then explain to me, son of mine, why you presumed that this little obsession of yours was worth putting in jeopardy the world we all strived so hard to create and protect."

I stare at her with wide eyes. Damn, Rhea sure knows how to sass someone.

Spencer leans over to Axel. "Dude, I'm gonna need you to pinch me, because I'm not entirely sure whether this conversation is taking place right now or not."

"Tell me about it." Axel mutters. "I don't know whether to lower my weapon out of respect or whether to keep distrusting Señor Psychopath over there."

Poseidon ignores their conversation, keeping his eyes trained on the woman standing in front of him. "It is not an obsession."

"Bullshit!" The word bursts out of my mouth, and I freeze when everyone turns to stare at me. I gulp, and cough out my objection under my breath. "I call bullshit."

Hades, who's the only one who hears me the second time, barely manages to stifle a laugh.

Rhea returns her attention back to Poseidon. "If not an obsession, then what?"

"An investment." He replies haughtily. "In the future."

"Poseidon, there would not be a future to invest in should you continue down the path you have set yourself on."
