17| The Everyday Bickering

Maha

"Maha check salt in it, am not sure if I had added enough" Maya extended the potato marinade towards me and I picked up a little for tasting. "Perfectly fine api!" I replied and she gave a satisfactory smile before keeping the bowl with the kneaded dough.

"I love aaloo k parathey" Maya was saying while making small balls out of the dough. I looked side ways at Hussain replying; "So does Hussain" Hussain remained calm, reading his morning paper with no tint of distaste on his face.

For last few weeks Hussain was acting extremely weird around Maya; all cool and collected as if her presence wasn't affecting his nerves any more. Me and Shehry were almost getting a heart attack every minute witnessing this miracle in front of our eyes.

"Really? tabhi aaloo k parathey ki tera hea, garam or mirchi wala" Maya commented back onto which Hussain DIDN'T react at all and I turned, this time gawking his face in utter shock.

"Hussain you okay?" I couldn't help but walked up to him and poked his shoulder. He looked away from the newspaper and pressed his finest smile at me. "Yeah am perfectly fine, kia hua mujhey" he blinked his eyes and I nodded uncertainly.

I took out yogurt and cream from the fridge and right then Shehry entered inside.

"mein kena wan itwaar da din hovey te aaluwan de paraothey howen. Wah! The bestest day with the yummiest breakfast" Shehry chirped sniffing in the air and Maya showed him a thumbs up. "Agreed Mr. oh-so-dramatic!" and Shehry received the praise with a jerk to his collar.

"Shehry chae tum banao ge aj" I announced and he kept his hand over his chest bowing down. "apki khuwahish hamarey liye hokum ka derja rakhti hea janab-e-aaliya!"

Maya and I burst in to laughter. "Kitna dramebaz hea tumhara ye wala bhai Maha!" Maya commented popping her eyes out and I nodded. "and what about wo wala?" I gestured at my back towards Hussain and Maya rolled her eyes.

"Don't even ask Maha! I can write a whole book on his tareefein" she replied being sarcastic, and a little loud purposely on to which Hussain folded the paper and kept it on the table in front of him. He ignored Maya's comment as if suna he na ho.

"ye kuch din se sooraj kahan se nikal raha hea Maha?" Shehry whispered near me and I held my chuckle as he weirdly stared at Hussain.

"I think Hussain k room se nikalta hea aj kal" Maya replied and I choked on to the sip of water in my mouth, Maya chuckled looking at my weird expression.

Together we made those parathey, meanwhile Hussain left the kitchen attending a call and Shehry put tea over the flame. "Maya ki jadoo tona keeta ae tu ne merey masoom se pra te?! Ae te insaan vergi herkatein kerne lag piyaa ae" Shehry asked Maya who giggled shaking her head.

"Not magic, its called charm" she then looked at him jerking her imaginary collars up. "Maya's charm. Hard to resist!" she boasted, making him roll his eyes.

"Khair itna to mein apne bhai ko janta hoon, kuriyan da charm warm kam ni kerda odey sarriyal dimagh te" Shehry denied firmly and both of us laughed.

"Poor Khizrah! I pity her" Maya made a face and right then Hussain entered inside, doing something over his phone.

Shehry stepped forward and in a blink of my eye he snatched Hussain's phone from his grip making him look up in utter shock. "Kitchen time is family time. No cell phone allowed please!" and with that he turned off his phone and kept it over the counter.
