The next day at school, Lindsay chewed me out for not answering her text. She was even more furious that I didn’t tell her right away when Keith asked me out, but she got over. Clark however sulked the whole day. But even his mood couldn’t bring me down.
At the moment, my eyes were glued to the football field with my camera poised in my hand. I was taking pictures of the game for the yearbook. But then again sometimes I just snapped lone shots of Keith for my own guilty pleasure.
It looked like it would be a long night if the first quarter had any indication. But surprisingly, not in the way you think it would be. They weren’t slaughtering us, or running all over us. In fact, this looked like an interesting game, as at the moment it was scoreless and we were doing a good job of moving the ball down the field and equally good at defending it.
As I put my camera up to take a picture, someone took my camera away and out their hands over my eyes.
“Hardy har har, Clark. Can I please have my camera back?” I said annoyed while holding out my hand.
“It’s not me,” I heard Clark’s voice say from somewhere in front of me.
I frowned, not knowing who it could be. I knew that the hands definitely belonged to a guy at how big they were. I know Cole would never do such a thing since he’s too reserved to play tricks like that.
“Then who is it?” I whined, not really in the mood to guess anything.
“Aw, you’re no fun Pen,” came a deep familiar laugh. No, it couldn’t be him, could it?
“Jake?” I whispered, not really believing it.
The person removed their hands and I was immediately spun around. There in front of me stood Jake, his bright blue eyes were lit up with amusement while grinned happily looking down at me.
“Jake! It is you!” I squealed before jumping on him in a death hug.
“It’s nice to see you too lil sis,” he chuckled before letting go of me.
“But don’t you… what about…” I tried to say.
But Jake cut in, figuring out what I was trying to say. “It’s all cool. We actually had a bye week this weekend. So, I thought I’d come up here and visit for a couple days. I haven’t been here in so long, it was kinda calling me back here, ya know?”
“Not really,” I shook my head, “but I’m glad you came to visit anyways.”
By this time, people were starting to gather around us whispering. Was Jake really back in town? Of course he was the hometown hero, so of course they would be curious.
“So, anything new since I last visited? Do I have to pound anyone’s head in for hurting you?” he joked, lightly squeezing my shoulder, but I know that deep down he was being serious.
“Nope,” I said, but then my thoughts drifted to Keith.
“If you stick around a while though, you might have the pleasure of doing that,” Clark chimed in, trying to sound as if it were a joke.
“Why you say that?” Jake asked looking at Clark suspiciously.
“It’s because I’m dating Keith Bennett,” I said softly while glaring at Clark.
Jake narrowed his gaze at me, and then looked back and forth between Clark and me before bursting into a fit of laughter.
“Oh! This is too good!” he slapped his knee while clutching at his stomach.
“I don’t get what’s so funny,” I humphed, crossing my arms.
“For one, I can see that Clark is jealous,” he calmed down a bit while nodding at Clark’s darkened expression. “And two, I don’t know how you’re dating Keith.”
