Since our county fair was over Labor Day weekend, all of us went back to school on Tuesday. My conscience had been nagging at me all day yesterday. I’ve never really full on blown up at Clark before, so I guess you could say that this was our first friend fight. I needed to find him and apologize to him. I’m guessing that Clark also wanted to amend things, because he came up to my locker, looking like he’d been searching for me.

“I need to say something,” we both mumbled at the same time.

“You go first,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly.

“No, you go first,” I said while poking his arm.

“No, I insist. Ladies first,” he said sternly.

“Fine, I will. You see, I uh… I just wanted to apologize for blowing up at you the other night. I understand that I probably hurt your feelings, and you didn’t really know what else to say to me saying what I did. I’m… sorry Clark,” I said apologetically.

“Um, thanks. Well, I have my own apologizing to do. I just wanted to say sorry for my response. You’re right, saying whatever was just rude. I bet it did come off as uncaring, which I really didn’t mean. I just said the first word that came to my mind. So, I’m sorry that I seemed uncaring about you Pen,” he said, smiling down at me.

“Apology accepted,” I said grinning hugely. “We’re uh… still friends, right?” I asked as I raised an eyebrow at him while giving him puppy dog eyes.

“Of course we are, we’re best friends for life. Now give me a hug,” he said goofily as he opened his arms.

Giggling giddily, I wrapped my arms around his torso and squeezed him tightly. He squeezed me back just as hard, if not harder. I began coughing, and started lightly pounding on his back, signaling that I couldn’t breathe. As we let go of our hug I heard light tittering, and when I looked, I saw John Anderson standing there with Torri Chambers.

Torri is the captain of the cheerleading squad. She’s the typical bitch, with platinum blonde hair that comes down to her shoulders, along with green eyes. All of the guys drooled over her prefect figure, while all the girls cast jealous glares. There’s a rumor that she had breast implants too. I don’t know if that’s true though.

“If it isn’t stinky girl and her ever caring best friend Clark,” she said haughtily as she looked us over. “Or, now is it boyfriend Clark?”

“Yeah, everyone knows that no guy in this school would be caught dead liking you,” John sneered, as he had to add in his two cents like usual.

“For your information, Clark is not my boyfriend,” I let out an irritated sigh. “But, I don’t see how it concerns you harpies.”

“Oh trust me Penelope,” she said bitterly, dragging out my name. “It does concern me, for you see, I’m the one that knows everything first. We can’t have false rumors spreading around now, can we? It would make me look stupid.”

“Too late, she’s already stupid,” Clark snickered into my ear. I couldn’t keep in a laugh, but I quickly recovered by coughing and then covering my mouth with my hand as I tried to keep in the giggles.

“What was that?” Torri growled, her face contorting in anger.

“Well, uh,” I stuttered looking over to Clark for help, but he just shrugged his shoulders. What a help he was. “Clark told me that he uh… was wondering what led you to believe this news in the first place?” I lied, casually shrugging it off.

“Oh,” she said as her lips pursed. “Well, I was talking to Keith yesterday. He was rambling on and on some nonsense. But when I yelled at him to stop, he said to me, ‘You know what? I saw Clark kiss Penelope last night at the fair. Isn’t that something?’ So naturally, I had to find out if this was true, and whether it meant anything. But now, it doesn’t look like it really matters what Keith saw. Later losers,” she flounced away with a wave of her hand, John following after her like a lost puppy.
