Holding onto anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned. – Buddha
*gunshots* I fall out of bed in a panic not knowing what was going on. I land on the ground with a thud still confused as to what was happening. I stand up and look out of my old one pained bedroom window and I witness 3 cops with their guns drawn on a man who was kneeling on the gravel road with his hands behind his head. I exhale in relief knowing that I am safe. What a wonderful way to wake up. Another morning in good old Los Angeles, California. I know what you’re thinking, LA? Lucky! And for the most part I would agree with you, but I live in a part of LA you certainly do not want to be in. I live in a neighbourhood known as Watts. Notorious for its gangs and violence, I've been living here for practically my whole life.
I walk out of my room not really fazed from the shit show that just happened outside. It’s not really a rare occurrence in this part of town; I’m actually surprised when I don’t wake up to the smell weed wafting through my window in the early morning breeze. I casually stroll to the bathroom and quickly put my long blonde hair in a pony hair and wash my face. Once I’m done I look at my reflection in the mirror. My bright blue eyes staring back at me. I didn’t want this life, I want to know my little sister will be safe at school, I want to go to sleep knowing I’m secure. I pat my face dry with the towel hanging up on the rusted out towel rail and head downstairs for breakfast. The floorboards creak as I make my way to the main floor of our old house that’s deteriorating by the second. I enter the kitchen and am immediately greeted by my brother Hunter and the sweet smell of his special pancakes he makes me and Spencer every Saturday morning.
“Morning Carson, grab come pancakes while they’re hot”
Hunter said with a smile that was to large for eight o’clock in the morning.
“How’d you sleep?”
He asked with the same annoyingly perky grin
“Alright”
I murmured still not full awake
“What about you?”
I asked just to be polite.
“Alright”
He said in a squeaky high pitched voice obviously trying to impersonate me
“Hey! I don’t talk like that!”
I said a little louder trying to sound as intimidating as possible
“I don’t talk like that!”
He said in the same high pitched voice as before.
He cracked a smile and I couldn’t help but find the humour in this whole conversation and smile back.
“There’s the smile I was looking for”
Hunter said happily and quite loudly. All of a sudden we hear someone stomping down the stairs. We look in that direction and see Spencer with bed head and bunny slippers descending not so gracefully to the main floor.
“What’s with all the noise down here? Cant anyone ever sleep in past ten in this house?”
she said with her arms crossed and a frown on her face.
“Sorry squirt, just thought you’d want some of my special pancakes before me and Carson ate them all.” Hunter said with a smirk and a wink in my direction.
“You wouldn’t.”
Spencer said in a challenging tone
“Wanna go back to bed and test that theory?”
“just pass the pancakes and no one gets hurt.” Spencer finally said after a long dramatic pause. We all laugh and go to the table Hunter already set with plates, butter and syrup. As we start digging into Hunters famous pancakes he speaks up.
“So I have some good news for you all.”
Me and spencer look up not knowing what the “good” news is going to be.
I look up at him and arch an eyebrow as to say, go on.
“We’re moving”
He said with a smile
“WHAT? REALLY?” I said jumping up and down with excitement
“Where?” spencer chimed in
“North Carolina! We’re leaving tomorrow. I got a job down there. I've already got a house for us and it’s in a really nice neighbourhood. I think this will be great for us.”
I was so excited I could barely contain the screams that wanted to exit my mouth
“Go on! Start packing we leave tomorrow bright and early.” Said hunter
Spencer ran upstairs as fast as her littler legs could carry her.
I started to follow her when Hunters now calm voice stopped me.
“Wait, Carson there’s something else I have to tell you.” He said very seriously.
“Ya? What is it?” I asked nervously
“When we go to north Carolina…”
“HUNTER! SPIT IT OUT!” I yelled
“We’re moving in with Dad”
