Chapter 16

Robert had just managed to get AnneMarie safely onto the roof when he noted Sansia's rush forward, he made a mad grab at her arm and failed dismally. The girl was much too fast and was now hurdling down the ladder.

"Sansia!" Robert yelled after her.

"Leave her alone, she's crazy," AnneMarie voiced.

"I'm going after her," Robert said.

"You'll get yourself killed," David said.

"If something happens to her..." Robert said but stopped as AnneMarie slid her body in front of the steps.

"I can't let you commit suicide trying to save her," she said.

"I'm not the one that needs saving," Sansia yelled. "Raydon does."

Sansia wasn't really sure what she could do but deep inside of her she knew that she just couldn't sit safely on the top of a roof while Raydon got mauled to death. She stopped for a moment to take in the situation. Raydon had side stepped the animal and it had gone hurdling forward out of control.

"Try to make it to the ladder," Sansia yelled.

"Stay up there," Raydon called turning about swiftly to face the animal again.

This could not end well, Raydon needed to make a run for the ladder before the wolf could gather its composure again.

The wolf narrowed its eyes and glared at Raydon. The man was fast, much faster than it had expected. If it made another miss like that the man would have a free pass to the fire escape and any hope of catching him would be gone. The wolf stepped forward reducing the space between it and the man. The next lunge must be precise, close enough that the man wouldn't be able to side step. It walked forward confidently and then stopped.

"Raydon!" Sansia screamed in panic. "More wolves are behind you."

"Stay put!" Raydon yelled as Sansia started coming down more of the steps.

"No way."

"These are the soft fluffy kind," Raydon explained.

AnneMarie scrunched up her face and peered over the edge of the roof to try to better understand what was going on in the street below her. Robert bent down and lifted her up carrying her a few feet away from the edge and out of his way.

The two wolves standing behind Raydon walked forward hesitantly. Sansia watched with a sense of amazement as the three stood side by side in the middle of the narrow alley and faced what was once the hunter.

The aggressor stepped forward; she was not one to cower. If she was going down she would take someone with her. Her downfall had been of her own making, she should have realized that this was no ordinary group. Still, the opportunity to deal them a fatal blow was there and she would not miss it.

"Don't move I'm coming down there," Robert said.

The wolf jumped throwing her body against the ladder. The action took Sansia by surprise, her grip loosened and she came tumbling down to the ground.

"Sansia!" Raydon yelled and went hurdling forward with the two wolves at his heel.

"No," Robert gasped gripping the ladder and making his way down as well.

The aggressor pounced; it was clear there would be no time to think through the attack, it was now or never. The fire in the eyes of the man made it clear that when he reached there would be all hell to pay.

The she-wolf opened her mouth and tried to bite down on Sansia's arm but couldn't, her jaws were locked apart. She whimpered, wriggling and trying to get free from the arms of the man whose look had been more than deceptive. The feel of teeth on the back of her neck made her cringe and suddenly two large bodies were dropping on top of her. She would fight because that was who she was but it was useless; this pack was too strong for a rogue like her.

"Sansia," Raydon was breathless, the exertion from the direct contact with the she-wolf was definitely telling on him. Scratches and blood were on his hands where he had forced them into the she-wolf's mouth to keep her jaws apart and stop her from biting Sansia.

"What's going on down there?" Dave yelled down.

"It's okay," Robert shouted. "The boss is fine."

"Those wolves saved us," AnneMarie said.

"I think those wolves saved them," Dave said.
