Chapter 15
"It makes me nervous just how easy it was to get out of there," Dave said glancing about him anxiously.
"It's daylight, not exactly a wolf's favourite hunting hour," Raydon said.
"Well hopefully we get out and back before dark," Robert said.
"Why couldn't we take the helicopter again?" AnneMarie asked.
"The helicopter would only seat four and there are five of us," Sansia explained.
"Maybe you should have stayed behind," AnneMarie suggested.
"That was not an option," Raydon cut in.
"So we all die because of her?" AnneMarie asked.
"You can still go back the others are still at the door they'll let you in," Raydon said.
"Besides we would still have to land on a building and then try to make it from there to where the supplies are. If we ran into trouble we might not get back to the helicopter and we could lose it. I don't think we want to risk losing one of our greatest assets so early in the game," Robert said.
Dave nodded.
"Over this way," Robert said.
Sansia glanced back at the building and its large glass doors; she couldn't help but feel a niggling sense of discomfort as they put distance between them and what she was quickly becoming to see as home.
"Our first stop should be electronic supplies," Robert said.
"That's right up my alley," Dave put in.
"Yes, a better radio, maybe some 'walkee talkees', batteries..." AnneMarie started to recite.
"You've got the list right?" Dave asked.
"Yes I've got the list," slightly annoyed.
"Down this street and then..." Robert stopped and drew back suddenly behind the building.
"There's a wolf out there," he said.
"Full?" Raydon asked.
Robert nodded too nervous to speak.
"Alone?" Raydon asked.
"I think so but it's pretty hard to tell, it was almost at the other end of the street," Robert explained.
"I'll see if I can com... you guys stay here I'll go ahead," Raydon said.
"What are you going to do?" Sansia demanded.
Raydon was already strolling out from behind the building and walking down the middle of the street.
"Are you crazy?" Sansia demanded racing after him.
"You're both crazy," AnneMarie offered.
"Sarah just needed us to accept her, maybe this wolf is like that," Raydon said.
"Are you kidding me? You don't know that, you saw what those creatures did to Anara."
Raydon looked momentarily hurt.
"All of them are not the same. This one could be gentle."
"And you're willing to stake your life on it?" Sansia asked.
"If I wasn't we would have no business out here on these streets," Raydon pointed out.
"What else aren't you telling me?" Sansia asked wandering at her own boldness with him.
"I'm not telling you..." Raydon stopped suddenly. "I don't think she's one of the soft fluffy ones. This might be a good time to start running."
"What the..."
The two turned around simultaneously and bolted back towards the building, the others were ahead of them already racing away.
"In there in there, just try to get in somewhere," Raydon shouted.
"It's locked!" AnneMarie screamed.
They raced on rattling every door that they passed. It seemed like barely seconds before they could hear the wolf close to their heels.
"Through there!" Raydon yelled. "Up the fire escape."
Robert scrambled up first with Dave close behind him, Sansia reached the ladder next and scaled it quickly but AnneMarie had managed to fall a little behind and was gripping her side.
"Go!" Raydon screamed at her.
Sansia could see that the girl was making her greatest effort but she had certainly not anticipated this level of exertion.
The wolf rounded the corner behind them and stopped. It was clearly assessing the situation. There were three humans currently outside its reach and two on the ground. It glanced past Raydon and looked at the girl limping along towards the ladder, that was the one it clearly wanted to go for but Raydon's stance said clearly it would have to go through him to get to her.
The wolf reluctantly tilted its head and attention to Raydon. It stepped forward slowly assessing the strength of its adversary. The man was tall but lean, the wolf would have weight advantage but there was something about the man that cautioned the animal to be careful.
"One of you might want to come down and help her," Raydon suggested. "I'm not exactly sure how this is going to go down."
"I'll go," Sansia said slipping her foot on the ladder but Robert pulled her back.
"No, let me go. I'm strong enough to carry her if I have to. Plus the boss doesn't need to be worrying about you down there."
He didn't wait on an argument he hurried down the ladder and gripped AnneMarie whose foot had just touched the lowest rung.
The wolf spared a brief glance at the two, it was pointless thinking about going after them, the man in front of her would never let her pass.
The wolf bared its teeth hoping for a response of fear, none seemed forthcoming. It was time to attack or the man would himself leap onto the ladder once the others were clear and escape.
The wolf leapt and Sansia screamed and raced towards the fire escape.
