Chapter 18
"Open this door!" Robert yelled but it was too late, the wolves had reached them, they launched themselves at the weakest in the group, Annemarie.
"Hit it," Sansia cried out slamming her fist against the neck of the biggest wolf in an effort to dislodge it. The wolf didn't budge sparing just the briefest of glances at her and then refocusing its attention on Annemarie.
"Help me! Help me!" Annemarie bawled.
She was putting up a decent fight, her arms were protecting her face and neck, but unfortunately that left most of her body exposed and the animals, though favourably disposed to the neck were willing to settle for bites about her body.
Sansia aimed the can of HCI carefully, she couldn't risk any of it getting on Annemarie, then sprayed. The wolves howled and drew back; spots were starting to appear on their skins, the hair was being burnt off and Sansia could see some scaring of the tissue. The wolves drew away from Annemarie for a moment and glared at Sansia. They seemed hesitant to attack but she presented a threat with her acidic weapon.
Robert stepped forward, raised the stick he had brought with him from the building, and then lowered it with full force against the head of the largerst wolf, the stick broke.
"Open the door!" David screamed.
The wolves stared at Robert, the bruising on the wolves' skins was already healed and fur was growing back in front of their eyes.
"We can't win," Robert muttered.
Sansia swallowed hard, they appeared to have achieved little, but still they had managed to stop the wolves from attacking Annemarie.
The sound of a vicious growl caused everyone, including the wolves to glance away. It was Raydon and without hesitation he launched himself at the largest wolf.
The wolf didn't hesitate, it stepped to the side, shifted its body, and opened its mouth; it was ready for the attack. Raydon's body slammed into it but it didn't go down.
Raydon's two wolves were circling the other three slightly smaller wolves, they were smaller than the first wolf but they were bigger than either Mark or Ren.
"We just need weapons, please," David cried still pounding on the door.
"We have to help," Sansia said.
"You can't risk getting any of that stuff on Raydon," Robert said. "We need to pull Annemarie out of the middle of the fight zone."
The big wolf growled; its mouth wrapped around Raydon's hand and its teeth pressed down.
Sansia tried to tell herself that there was part wolf in Raydon too – she prayed that would be enough to help him overcome this creature.
"Aaaagghhh..." Raydon groaned.
He encircled the wolf's neck with his other arm and applied pressure trying to choke the creature. The monster was having none of it. Using its superior body weight the animal spun about breaking Raydon's hold on its neck, fortunately also releasing his other hand from its mouth. However, it latched its mouth onto Raydon's shoulder instead.
Sansia raced forward, the animal clearly had the upper hand now and was straddling Raydon while he squirmed beneath it fighting to pry its mouth off of his shoulder. In a way he was lucky that the shoulder was the area the animal had managed to grasp as Raydon's broad strong shoulders did not offer a very comfortable grip for the animal. Sansia tried to hold the spray can firmly in trembling hands and pressed hard, moving the can back and forth to cover as much of the creature's body as she could. The pain and bruising might not last long but she had to hope that it would be intense enough to give Raydon the break he needed in this fight.
It was.
The wolf howled stumbling away from Raydon for a moment, its back dripping blood. It squirmed, growled and limped to the side, it was clearly considering retreat. It's smaller partners glanced across at the sound of their wounded leader. Their battle had been vicious and bloody but they had been starting to get the upper hand. They had felt confident that once the leader had finished off the man, he would have come and helped them finish off the two trespassing wolves. The leader's battle was not going the way they had hoped. The smaller wolves backed off, their leader might need their support if they were to escape. They had recognized the man was not normal when they had chased him, but clearly their leader had greatly underestimated the man and his mate.
The bigger wolf howled for retreat but Raydon was not having any of it, this battle was going to end now.
"Raydon, no!" Sansia screamed as Raydon dragged himself off of the ground and flung himself on the back of the leader, the wound was already starting to heal but Raydon was not about to let it. Raydon drove his good hand into the damaged back of the wolf, pressed forward and came out with the wolf's heart beating in a palm surrounded by dark two inch long finger nails.
"Oh my gosh," David squealed as the large wolf dropped to the ground dead.
"Grow another heart," Raydon grunted angrily.
The smaller wolves stepped slowly back. The man was fast. They had not even had a chance to try to save their leader.
The two wolves and the man stepped forward towards them. The sensible thing to do now would be run but the man standing there with blood dripping from his hands was sending off a dangerous vibe, that man was not going to let them escape.
The beta, the largest of the three remaining wolves, glanced about. It had fought beside its alpha for days now, perhaps this man was willing to be its new alpha, clearly he was worthy of the honour.
The wolf dropped its hinds quarters, its ears hung down and its tail was tucked between its legs. The two smaller wolves watched for a moment and then followed suit.
The man and the two wolves still advanced. The wolves held their ground, they were committed to submission to this new alpha, even if it meant the death of them all.
"Wait Raydon," Sansia said. "I think they're trying to show they're willing to submit to you."
"Submit?" Raydon growled. "They tried to kill my pack."
The beta wolf tilted its body towards Sansia, the mate was clearly more kind hearted, it just needed to ensure that the movement would not be seen as any kind of threat to the mate or the alpha-man would see it as an opportunity to kill them.
"You said yourself that the change can make them scared and cause them to act outside their character," Sansia pointed out.
"On day one, this is three days later," Raydon yelled.
"Don't yell at me," Sansia responded. "I say we give them a chance."
Raydon growled but stopped walking forward, the two wolves beside him did the same.
"We need to get into this building and get some real weapons," Sansia said.
"We'll break the door down," Raydon said sparing a glance at the humbled creatures in front of him before walking towards the door.
"Wait," a voice from inside said. "I'll open it, just please don't hurt me."
