"Okay rookies, these are your section and squad leaders," Mr. Bolton explains. "you will respect them just as you do me and Mrs. Bentley."
The leaders then introduce themselves.
"Let's get started with the basic thing of marching band, an 8 to 5 step."
After learning the basics of marching and dying in the heat, it was time for their lunch break.
With the veterans sitting next to them, the freshmen start asking questions.
"Is this the whole band?" someone asks.
"Oh hell no, our band is way much bigger than this." replies an upperclassman. The Milsbury marching band was a 5-A band, the second largest group of people in band than in a 6-A band.
"When will I be able to meet the 1st chair player?" asks Melanie.
"Next week, after rookie camp is over." replies the same upperclassmen.
Melanie needed to know her opponent's weaknesses and how to beat him for 1st chair in concert season.
"Come on freshman, it's time for sectionals."
Melanie leaves by herself, her only friend being a color guardist.
"Love you, Mel! See you after sectionals!!" says her best friend Daniella.
"Love you too, Dani, see ya later!"
After 3 days of learning the basics, it was time to begin regular band camp.
