Her eyes moved back and forth behind her eyelids, indicating the depth of her sleep. The hard part was over, and the rest of her transition would unfold in silence, while she slept. The covers I had placed over her for the hundredth time rose and fell in a steady rhythm. Her breathing was not slow, but erratic. I knew this could be the cycle of REM sleep she was currently in, or it could be the dreams. I have heard a few things about transition dreams, but I had never experienced them, having been born into vampirism.

I reached over her and untied her hands from my bedposts, then freed her ankles as well. I had felt guilty about tying her down. But it was that, or risk her falling off the bed with the muscle spasms. They were sometimes the equivalent of grand mal seizures, and I did not want to take any risks. I would not have let her fall, but there is no harm in extra safety precautions, since she was still technically a human.

It was safe to leave her now, but I could not. She looked so peaceful after she had spent the last ten hours going through the spasms that I just wanted to look upon her. I also wanted to be here when she woke. Since the spasms had stopped, I knew she only had a little while to go. If she did not remember, she would be frightened. I could only hope that she did remember.

Her transition had begun in her room, about twenty hours ago. After she had fallen asleep, I had admired her sleeping face for a few minutes, but then I had gotten up. I knew she could not have remained there. When the DNA reached her muscle tissue, it would cause her own muscle tissue to grow rapidly, which would help to burn body fat. Such rapid change to the muscle tissue causes the muscles to spasm. She could not be here after that part took place. If she were to wake here, and smell human blood, it might cause a problem. Some newly turned vampires are crazed with thirst, and if Jenna was one of them, she would need a lot of blood. It is best to just avoid those situations. Also when Jenna woke she would likely be thirsty even if she was not one of the crazed ones. It would not do to have any humans around.

I’d had several hours before the spasms would start. She was only in the first phase of transition then. But still, I had placed a kiss on her forehead and headed out the door in silence. I’d had to retrieve my car from one of the campus parking lots across the street from the café, and return to Jenna’s apartment to take her to my home. The DNA was busy multiplying now, and would be a few hours before it could even start the second phase which was healing. I’d had plenty of time, but I did not want to be away from her. And I’d been anxious to get her home before students started waking up for class. It was almost five AM at that time. It had taken us ten minutes to walk from the café to her apartment, but it had only taken me three seconds to reach my car, which was a little further than the café. I’d gotten in and hurriedly drove to Jenna’s door, got out, and went in. I’d rushed to her room, scooped her up, and walked back to my car. After I’d gotten her situated in the seat, I then realized she would wake and not have any of her things. I’d thought about going to retrieve some, but she might be angry or embarrassed to find I had rummaged through her room to find her clothes and such. So I’d just gotten into my car and drove her to my home. I only lived about ten miles away. As I had laid her on my own bed, I had wondered what was going on inside her body right then. I mean I knew, but I’d wished I could see it take place. When her spasms started, I knew what was happening then. She was fully healed and starting the body transformation. The third stage.

The human’s body goes through four major phases in a transition to vampire. The first three phases took the longest, at about six to ten hours a piece. The first phase is the multiplying stage, where my DNA focuses on multiplying and sending signals to the human’s brain to sleep. Then once the human falls asleep the DNA continues to multiply until it can start to heal every last detail of the human’s body.  After all healing is done, the third stage begins.
