16: Movie Nights Fix Everything
"This one?" I asked for the millionth time, sashaying my hips out of the dressing room and grinning down at the dress. It was long, ending at the floor. It had a light brownish tinted with orange.
For a dance for the fall, I'd say this dress was pretty perfect. I knew Selena would be upset that I went dress shopping with Emmett instead of her once she recovered from her grandfather's death, but she would understand.
I hoped she went to the dance.
But that was a selfish hope. She had things to deal with. I could dance without her, and I wasn't going to pull her from her mourning process for a dance.
"I don't know," he said, biting his lips. "Do that thing with your hips again." Glaring at him, I crossed my arms and put my weight on one leg. "It's really gorgeous, but it just... I feel like it doesn't do you justice."
"Thanks?" I said unsurely, laughing a little to disguise my discomfort and embarrassment. "Well, I've tried on exactly six dresses and none of them 'hugged my figure perfectly' like you said. I know you're a professional and all, but..?"
"Well..." He ran a hand through his hair and leaned his head back.
"If you say that we've been here for hours because you enjoy watching me model these dresses, then I would run if I were you." My eyes narrowed to slits as I watched him carefully.
"Well..." He repeated the same word again.
That's so what he was doing.
"Let's move on to shoes." He clapped his hands together and rose from his seat. "And we should go with that long, grey dress. It looked amazing on you."
I scoffed, my eyes narrowing still. "I just need some pumps or something." He shook his head.
"Just pumps," he scoffed. "Let's go."
"How much do you think all this costs?" I asked uncertainly.
"Doesn't matter," he shrugged. "It's on me."
"No!" My mouth popped open with my protest. This must be expensive! How could he just pay for it like it was nothing? Biting my lip, I watched him give me a firm look that said not to argue.
"I'm paying. It's fine. I'm not in a tight financial situation, you are. It's not a problem." Sighing, I followed him into the shoe aisle.
After I had everything, he guided me out of the mall towards a small pizzeria. "This place is amazing," he stated.
"Never been." I looked around curiously, seeing a giant mushroom towering over the podium where servers waited for customers to enter. It was like an umbrella. There were abstract paintings here and there, with many insect paintings as well.
It looked much bigger on the inside than it did on the outside. I was impressed, looking around with a smile. "Two?" a girl asked, her eyes staying mainly on Emmett.
Emmett nodded and slung an arm around my shoulder. "So who's asked you to the dance?" he asked.
If I wasn't mistaken, there was a hint of a territorial tone in that statement. "No one."
"Well, you'll be the hottest single girl on the floor," he said with a grin. I rolled my eyes.
"Gee, thanks. Glad to know my relationship status affects my beauty." We both laughed as we sat at a booth. The seats were green, red, blue, and purple. It was so colorful, it just made a smile come to my face.
"Well, I'm thinking pepperoni," he announced.
"Definitely," I agreed with a smile. "With garlic cheese sticks."
