18: Hear My Side

It was the smartest thing ever to invent the room I stood in with four corners. A nice corner provided a safe place for the more isolated, antisocial pupils at a dance.

A corner was where I stood.

Well, I was hiding from Jacob. It had been announced that a slow song was next and he'd excused himself for the restroom. I now hid, hoping to safely pass the song without him finding me.

It wasn't that I hated him or anything. He wasn't my favorite person ever, but I didn't mind him as a person.

Just... His hands roamed a little too much for my liking. It was obvious he only really wanted to take me to the dance because of my looks. He knew absolutely nothing about me.

I tipped my head back against the wall. My breathing was slightly labored in the crowd, the thick throng of bodies making it hot and slightly smelly. If it hadn't been cooler outside, it probably would've stank worse.

He insisted I call him "Jake." I didn't like that. I'd met a few Jakes, and I liked them. I didn't like Jacob enough for him to elevate to the title of "Jake."

"Louise, hey!" I inwardly groaned. It was J.P. "Have you seen Selena?"

I'd been watching the two closely. It was very interesting, really. Selena acted as though he annoyed her to death, and he acted like she was a goddess. But even I could tell she was very fond of him. I'd never seen him, but it was quite obvious there was some type of love going on between them.

"I'm not sure."

"I expected you to be hiding from Jacob. I was really confused when she set you two up. She is not the type of friend to set you up with such an idiot."

"I didn't think she was, either. But here we are." I shrugged and held up my hands helplessly.

"Well, I pried a little. She said she was trying to make Emmett upset," he said with a smirk.

One eyebrow shot up, leaving the other one low over my eye as I glared at the crowd angrily. She wasn't where I was looking, but my glare was directed at her.

"Why would she do that?" I demanded.

He held up his hands. "She set he and Naomi up as well." By then, I was seething. She was purposely trying to cause drama! I understood that she was a pretty, popular girl and practically breathed drama, but she didn't have to make it my life.

"Why would that make Emmett and I upset?"

"I don't know what her thought process was, but it obviously worked. I haven't seen you go near Emmett tonight. I even caught you giving him dirty looks."

"Yeah, well..." I trailed off, not having anything to say back because I knew it was true. "He said some things I didn't like."

Okay. In truth, he said nothing that should have bothered me. It was more his attitude and a few things I was just annoyed by.

"Well, get over it. It obviously bothers you, seeing him with Naomi."

"Did they seem okay?" I asked suddenly, remembering the scene Emmett made after his supposed date with Naomi.

"You mean aside from the fact that she's dancing very inappropriately in circles around him while we're at a school dance? No. I guess not. Why?"

"It's just that I saw Emmett from my window," I began unsurely, making sure to hide the fact that it was his guest house's window, "and he seemed really irritated. It was the night he told me he came home from a date with her."
