31: Caught
To say that I was "excited" for Emmett's birthday was a major understatement. I was ecstatic. When the time finally rolled around, I had the presents in bags and in a bundle at the corner of the room. The morning of his birthday, I looked at the clock to see that I still had a little time before he woke up.
I quickly ordered room service and then got on my phone to see food places he would like for dinner. I knew he was a steak guy, but also liked anything Italian, Chinese, Japanese, or anything not American as well. Really, he wasn't picky. I wished he was picky so I could have a narrower group of restaurants to choose from.
Finally, I chose a steak place that had four stars and placed a reservation. The food arrived as soon as the door opened to reveal Emmett in sweats and a loose, black T-shirt. I grinned as his eyes landed on the plate with bacon, pancakes, and eggs. Those were his favorite breakfast foods.
"You get to open two presents here at breakfast, and then the other two at dinner," I said with a catlike grin.
"You got me four presents?" he asked, his eyes wide. "Why did you do that?"
"Because I can," I shrugged, acting nonchalant although I was buzzing with excitement on the inside. I'd gotten an extra gift for him using the rest of the three hundred and some from the two hundred seventy I'd won. It was just sweatpants with the Auburn logo on the pant leg, but I figured he'd like them. He always wore a pair of sweatpants, and most of them were looking a little ratty. He needed some brand new ones.
He sighed and moved his eyes to the bundle in the corner of the room. "I just pick two to open?"
"Yeah." He grabbed the first two he saw and sat down next to the pancakes. I could tell he was putting on an irritated front because I spent quite a bit, but I knew he was excited. The first one he opened was the pair of sweats. I grinned when he unfolded them to see the logo.
The grin that spread across his face told me enough. They were really soft on the inside. "I'm going to say you got me something else Auburn related when we were in that store. Is that why you were being weird?"
I grinned and he looked into the other bag to see the painting I'd gotten. "This is awesome," he said, looking over it. I knew he had several Auburn posters and pictures on his walls, so it would go good in his room.
His walls were even navy blue, so it worked.
"How much did you spend?"
"Don't worry about it," I said with a smirk. He gave me a flat look. "What do you want to do today?"
"We've been going around town for the past few days. Let's just stay in and go out for dinner or something." I nodded and grabbed a piece of bacon from the plate. "Plus, it's supposed to snow a lot today. We brought winter clothes, but I don't know if we're prepared for a Michigan snow storm."
"A storm?" I asked with a frown. That wouldn't work for the whole dinner plan.
"It's supposed to be over by four, but there will be a lot of snow," he explained. I sighed and sat on the couch, getting the remote from the coffee table on the way. "What's on?"
"Nothing that looks very good," I said, frowning up at the TV. Emmett's phone rang loudly, making me look at it in alarm.
"It's Selena," Emmett sighed. "She's up awfully early." When he answered it, I heard a combination of yelling, squealing, and giggling. He waited patiently for it to stop before saying, "Good morning."
She talked for a good twenty seconds before he said, "Thanks. Um, why are you up so early?" More talking. I flipped through the channels before I landed on The Grinch and stayed on it while I waited for Selena to finish. "She wants to talk to you," Emmett said, breaking me out of my thoughts.
