Holder waited for the chief of staff to come in what seemed like an eternity.
"Excuse me sir. I need a prisoner transfer permit for Carl Gunner. He's being moved to a more secured place."
"Go ahead. Here." The chief signed a piece of paper without ease and handed it to Holder. He could tell the boss wasn't paying attention and really didn't care as it seemed he was busy into another case.
Holder went to the front office and handed the deputy working the late shift the prisoner transfer slip.
"Jack." The man directed the other officer. "Release Carl Gunner and get the transfer van ready."
"I can't. Chief got me stressed about this case." Jack shot back.
"Holder? Think you can do this on your own?"
"Totally. Just a guy, right?" But in his mind he was thankful that no one else would come.
The deputy handed Holder the ring of a variety of keys and pointed which ones he needed for the cell and van. He went to retrieve his phone from the evidence room and then proceeded to the cell and did the drill. Cuffed Carl, let him out of the building and into the van. Just as they took off, Linden pulled up behind them in Holder's car, not trailing too far. He checked his phone and found he had 25 minutes left before the next threat and some missed messages. If only the chief came sooner. Holder thought. When he came to a red light, he scanned each of the missed messages. There were only four.
Tick tock. Bullet's bleeding pretty bad.
Where's my friend?
Ignoring me are we?
Not a good idea. I don't like to be ignored. Wow, you sure don't care about Bullet don't you? Well then let's end her misery unless you come before the time limit.
That last message triggered something in Holder. Of course he cared about Bullet! How could he let this happen?! Rage enveloped him and he pushed down on the gas pedal, roughly throwing Carl in the back of the van to the floor. He would get there in time. He would get there in time. It became a mantra in his head.
I would get there in time. I would get there in time!
