Once the fires were lit, the sun was down and everyone had eaten, the fiddlers began to play a jolly tune. I couldn't help myself, I joined in with some other folks who were clapping while watching a bunch of folks dancing.
Soon Wade came up to me jumping and clapping to the happy tune and asked me for a dance, I didn't even hesitate. Together we skipped to the tune over to the group of dancers and joined the dance.
We were split off into couples of four to a circle. In our group there was Hattie and Mr. Campbell, to their right was Mr. and Mrs. Homer, Gideon and his little sister Mary were placed beside them, and Wade and Myself completed the circle.
Soon someone hollered, "Switch!" And everyone switched partners. The men ended up dancing with men, and the women with the other women. Wade and Gideon ended up together, as well as Mr. Campbell and Mr. Homer, who is his brother in law. Wade and Gideon as one gave a look I shall never forget when they had to partnered up, it was one of utter disgust, but in a funny way.
Now Hattie and Myself we're partnered, as well as Mrs. Homer and Mary.
Before long someone else hollered, "Switch!" This time it was Wade and Mary, Mr. Campbell and Mrs. Homer, Mr. Homer and Hattie, and Gideon and Myself.
Gideon was so shy, he wouldn't even look at me for the whole time we danced. As we spun in circles Wade was laughing at Gideon, and I was giggling and Him and Mary, who stood about half his size, but thought she was a queen, for Wade treated her a such. He is great with children, he shall make a wonderful father someday.
When the final notes of the song were played, Wade bowed low to Mary and she jumped into his arms and gave him the biggest hug she could and Wade returned it. Gideon finally looked at me and mustered up a shy "Thank you." and quickly turned and walked back to his families wagon.
A few more songs were played to which Wade and I danced
