"Shh, they'll hear us!"

He squeezed his eyes shut in fear and shuffled closer to his brother. They jumped at hearing their mother's screams as she was thrown against the wall again.

"W-why isn't she here yet?" he whispered.

"She's gonna come, you know she will."

Suddenly, they heard their sister yell from the top of the stairs they were hiding under. "See, I told you!" he whispered, both excited and relieved, knowing that their big sister would always come and save them.

He heard her rush down the stairs and waited on bated breath for her to find them. They looked out from the broken gap on the step to watch her run down over them and pushed a crayon out onto the step. They never left their toys out, the red crayon was a signal they had made up for her to know that they were hiding from danger.

Before she could turn around to see it, she was pulled away and thrown against the opposite wall. The boys quickly clamped their hands over each other's mouths to stop from screaming for her.

They saw someone crouch down in front of her, away from the men still destroying the house.

She tried to move away from the person but suddenly stopped. They tilted their heads in confusion, "Is she sleepy now?"

His brother frowned, "Maybe she's sick again.. but she'll still save us!" he said squeezing his hand.

A man stepped forward then and blocked their view of their sister, until a flash of light appeared behind him and they shielded their eyes. He turned and they could see that their sister and the person she was with had disappeared.

He began to shake in fear again. His brother held him as they moved away from the gap and back into the shadows. They huddled together, "It's okay, she gonna come back.. you know she will."

He nodded while they sat and cried silently, watching their parents being kicked towards the man's feet. They turned away and jumped, seeing the same person that had taken their sister now crouched down and peering into their hiding place. They stared in fear at the silver eyed woman, waiting for her to take them and hurt them like everyone else.

She placed her finger on her lip, "Shh, little ones." she whispered. "I'm not going to hurt you, but you have to come with me now."

"But.. mummy and daddy are dead now, will.. will you take us to our sister?" he whispered back between his sobs.

She smiled sadly, "Yes little ones, I promise you will be with her again."

They slowly crawled out of the small space and the woman lifted them into her arms; their small, shaking frames hidden under her cloak.

"Now close your eyes, little ones." she whispered.

Already knowing they wouldn't listen, she quickly pulled out a pretty purple stone as they heard the man speak.

"Burn it."

They peeked over her shoulder and bit back their cries as they watched their parents bodies being set alight while the rest of the men stood and smiled at the man.

They suddenly felt weak and the room grew dark. The boys glanced at each other with heavy lids still full of tears and fear as they drifted off to sleep in the woman's arms.

He reached for his hand and held it tight.

"It's okay brother, don't cry. It's just a bad dream.."
