Nikolai headed downstairs for breakfast, but stopped short as he passed the library.
He looked in and sighed, seeing his brother sitting and looking at the rain outside with a coffee cup in his hand.
"How long have you been up?" he said leaning on the door frame.
His ever quiet and mysterious twin gave a sideways glance. "It's cold. Put a fucking shirt on." he said and sipped on his coffee.
Nikolai shook his head and walked in, "Well, aren't we extra grumpy today. Nightmares again?"
"Someone has to remember."
He ground his teeth, knowing his brother didn't mean that. "Adriano."
He closed his eyes for a moment, "Sorry. Bad night."
He walked up to him and sat on the arm rest before taking his brother's cup and drinking from it. "I think you were right about it not being her."
He frowned, "What do you mean?"
"The rumours were true. The Princess is an Angel now."
Adriano huffed, "Think we would have remembered a pair of wings on our sister."
He chuckled, "True." he said before frowning down at him. He placed his hand on his shoulder, "You okay?"
Adriano pressed a hand over his and offered a slight smile, "Yes, brother."
Nikolai squeezed his shoulder in reassurance, "Good, because the witch will be here in two days."
He growled, "What?"
Nikolai sighed, "You knew she would be coming soon."
"Yes, she said she would return some day. Then we found out she's his fucking mother. Why would she be part of this?" he ground out.
"No idea, but I'll be sure to ask her." he said and finished off his coffee.
Adriano held his leg in place before he could stand, "You haven't told her?"
"I didn't have to."
He frowned, "What?"
Nikolai rolled his eyes, "Would you just have some faith in my plan for once?" he said and stood up.
Adriano growled and stood, "I would if you stopped acting like this was a fucking game! Like we aren't doing this for them! For her!" he yelled and threw his fist into the side of the sealed bookcase, cracking the wood.
"You really think I don't remember why we're doing this? You think I don't still dream of seeing her again? After 500 fucking years, after everything we've been through, not once have I ever given up hope and belief that she's still alive!" he said watching his brother stand with his back facing him.
Adriano dropped his shoulders, "If we made it this far.."
Nikolai smiled, "You know damn well she did too."
He slowly walked up to him and held his shoulder. "I still want her back just as much as you do brother, but you have to trust me here first."
"The witch is still the only person that can tell us where she is." he said low.
Nikolai smirked, "Not for long."
He frowned and turned to him. "What do you know?"
"She's been working with The Seer."
Adriano lifted a brow at him, "And you plan on using him too?"
"The Royal Ward on his magic has been lifted, and the witch is the one hiding her from us. If he's not blocked off from her anymore, there's nothing to stop him from telling us where she sent her."
"What about your plan?" he said with a frown.
"Nothing changes. The Prince and his precious Council will be dealt with no matter what."
Adriano smirked, "Yes, brother."
******
Nikolai and Adriano had been through a lot together, even after the war. At the age of six they were sent to an underground shelter until the war was over, and by the time they left, the two brothers were already in their teens.
Things had become relatively calm across the world by then, and it was easy to realise who had started it all when everywhere was covered in the Royal Army's colours. The whole world spoke of the Demon Prince and his amazing accomplishments, yet these praises did nothing but disgust and fuel their hatred for him.
Soon after, the witch returned to them. They wanted to know more about her, why she had helped them, and more importantly, where she had taken their sister. Yet each time they asked, she would simply brush them off, saying it was not time for them to know yet. She always seemed to be hiding from something or rushing off to be somewhere else, but they chose to ignore it.
She taught them how to blend in with their new surroundings so that they wouldn't be mistaken for slaves. She gave them new lives, and told them that their old ones should never be revealed to anyone around them.
They were grateful.
They were happy.
For about five seconds.
At the end of their final lesson, as the witch said her goodbyes and pulled them both in for a hug, she suddenly snapped their necks with barely a flick of her wrist.
They had been betrayed; or so they thought. A moment after their limp bodies hit the ground, she pulled out one of her amethyst charms and began swinging it back and forth between her fingers while chanting in a long forgotten ancient language; slowly walking around them in circles.
The amethyst shone bright before it shattered in her hand and the chain turned to ash. She watched the shimmering shards and ash fall across both their bodies, and waited. Seconds later, the boys let out a loud gasp as their eyes snapped open. Wide eyed and afraid, they stared at the witch before slipping back into darkness.. and with a knowing smile on her face, she left them once more.
A week later they had woken up in a city halfway across the world. No doctor that saw them could explain what had happened to them. They ran tests on their bodies and found that every time a needle was used on them, the tiny wound would close completely and disappear. The same happened with any blade or instrument, with any bump or scratch, it would simply repair itself in seconds. Before long it was proven that they had in fact become impervious to any form of bodily harm and immune to all illnesses.
Being under new rule, it was obvious that there was magic behind their condition, and soon the entire city had dubbed them to be The Immortal Twins.
Once the city's General got word of them, he immediately recruited them. At age 19, they were fully trained guards for his small army, with Nikolai taking charge of it by their 25th birthday.
They were treated like Gods.
The city was renamed in honour of them, and was now known as Deos Castellum, The Gods City. They continued to train and fight against anyone who questioned their strength.
They had wins and losses, they suffered torture and basked in victory.
Both had reached points where they questioned whether or not it would have been better for them to have died alongside their parents.
But each time they were reminded of why they continued to fight.
Her.
Their sister, the one person that could keep their hope alive.
Neither of them would ever choose to believe she had died in the war. It wasn't about showing trust in the witch that saved both her and them, or having blind faith in her will and survival.
They knew.
Their sister was still alive.
This was why they fought back even after all was lost. She was their last hope in the world.
She, was their reason for being.
And once they had her back by their side, nothing would stop their mission.
The Immortal Twins, would have their revenge.
