"Is he here?" A young man asked, standing in the doorway of an orphanage.
"He is but, he still doesn't want to talk to anyone right now. I'm sorry Cloak, maybe another time he'll be more open." The caretaker responded with a patient smile. In response, Cloak let out a sigh of relief.
"That's alright, as long as he's okay. When I heard he went missing, I was worried he was hurt." He started. He smiled when he saw a young girl shyly hiding behind the caretaker's leg. He knelt down so she could see him at eye level. "Hello, you're new here aren't you?"
In response, she hesitantly came out of hiding. She was silent, and to Cloak it seemed she kept her eyes closed purposely. "Hey, how come I can't see those pretty eyes your hiding?" He asked, to which she covered her face. He looked up at the caretaker. "Are people making fun of her?" He asked.
"No dear, she...well, the authorities told me she hasn't opened them since her parents died." The caretaker responded. She leaned down to whisper the rest in his ear. "Apparently the poor thing witnessed the murder."He froze for a moment, his heart aching for her. It was no wonder she was so shy, so scared. "What's her name?" He finally asked after a few moments.
"Her name is-" The caretaker started, but was interrupted by a small voice answering his question. "...Frisk."
"Frisk huh? Is that because you're...Frisky?" Cloak said, smiling, receiving a facepalm from the caretaker for his pun. But surprisingly, he got a small laugh out of her.Watching this unfold from a small opening in his door, the first boy in question glared. He assumed Cloak was abandoning him for the new kid, and in response he quietly closed his door.
"Frisk, I'll be back again real soon, so be good alright?" Cloak asked, standing up. She nodded, and he bid farewell to the caretaker before leaving.
"Well that was a pleasant surprise Frisk, perhaps we can talk more later?" The caretaker asked, smiling. Instead of getting a response, she watched Frisk run off upstairs, quietly sighing to herself. Instead of worrying, she went over to the door that was previously opened, and watching the conversation. She knocked lightly. "Ken?" She asked. With no response, she knocked again, a little harder. "Ken dear? Are you alright? Cloak was very worried about you." She said, waiting for a response. "Ken?"
Inside of the room, the window was opened, and the young boy had used it to leave once again.---
"Sorry...for this."
---Stretching, he stood outside of the cave of Mount Ebbot. He still went there after all these years.
"Cloak?"
He spun around at the sound of his own name. A young boy stood underneath the moonlight, Cloak knew him well. "Ken?! I thought you were in your room!" He exclaimed, running over and hugging him.
Ken didn't hug back. "Can we talk away from the woods?"
Cloak stood up, nodding. "Of course, over here." He responded, leading him over to the cave entrance by the edge of the mountain top. "What's going on? Are you okay?" He asked.
Ken didn't even look at him. "Why were you talking to that new kid? Are you gonna ditch me now?"
"What? No!" Cloak responded. "Ken, I spent all of last night looking for you! I was scared you were hurt!" He continued, he was going to get upset until he saw the tears streaming down Ken's face. He gently placed his hand on the young boy's shoulder. "I'm not ditching you. Not now, not ever. I promised didn't I?" Cloak asked. What happened next, Cloak didn't remotely see it coming.
"Sorry...for this." Ken started. When Cloak was trying to process what he meant by that, Ken pushed him off of the cliff with all the force he could muster.Time seemed to slow down for that moment, he felt his body slipping beyond his control, all he could do was reach out for Ken's hand.
The fall was painful, anywhere that could have hit the rocks of the mountain side on the way down, they did. It was clear, anyone who fell there was guaranteed dead, but Cloak felt his battered and bruised body hit the ground hard. He tried to move, tried to stay awake, but darkness took his sight and enveloped him from further harm.
