It was a perfect moment. I was walking along the edge of the ocean, while reading one my favourite books. The sun had started to set, along with shades of purple, pink and orange that were streaked across the sky. Every other girl had decided to wear their bikini tops, while I was wearing a plain loose black tank tucked into a maroon skater skirt that ended just a little above my knees.Maybe I was under prepared to take a swim, but I still liked the water beneath my feet as I walked on the waves.
My best friend, Scarlett, was an avid volleyball player. Considering we had just started Freshman college year in California, she and another friend of hers had arranged this big beach party for the new students of the college. Long story short, she forced me to come with even though I was majoring in English at the college, not Physical Education.
Everyone had been playing volleyball for 6 hours straight, no complains. Every girl in their bikini, every guy in their trunks. What's to complain about. I however, have gotten hit by the volleyball knocking out my glasses almost every time.
Scarlett shrieked and yelled in my direction, "Sorry, Paige! These guys can't aim!" I look back at her, while shifting my glasses back into place. The guys were giggling like the girls on the other side of the net. I just shouted back at Scarlett.
"It's alright, it's not like I went blind right?"
She mouthed a sincere, "I'm so sorry!" and I gave her the thumbs up. She was an amazing player, and I knew she meant it. She went back to her game, while I went back to my book.
Just as they were finishing up the game, putting away the nets and that stupid ball, I was finishing up another chapter of another favorite book of mine. The moon was shining and glistening against the water, and the stars were infinite. Just seeing the stars and moon fascinate me as much as my favourite books could. I was in love with it all. I put away my book, and fixed my bun. I head towards the edge of the beach again, this time with my music in hand.
My favourite song had started to play in my ears, and all I could do was sway. This song was my favourite song to dance to because it reminded me of my parents back in New York. When my father had enough slow dances with my mother, he would always grab my hand and tell me to dance with him at each of our family gatherings. This was always the song that played, every time he had asked me to dance with him, and I miss him so much. I didn't have a care in the world, and no one was there to stop--
I felt a cold hand on my shoulder and looked up. He was one of the guys playing volleyball a few hours ago with the others, and all I could do was stare.
Gladly, he was wearing an New York Police Department sweatshirt or I probably would've passed out in two seconds. He was still in board shorts, and his eyes were just such a beautiful color. There were so many stars out that they just shone in his eyes. It was something beautiful.
"Hey," He said in a deep voice. I didn't know what to do, so I offered him my ear piece. He took it, and put it into his ear. He looked at me, and said in a low voice.
"You know this song?" He asked suspiciously, a smile creeping on his face.
"It's my favourite song." I said looking into those shining orbs.
"This was the song my parents first danced to when they had met."
I look at him in awe, and not a word has been spoken. He takes my hand offering to dance. I take a bow and smile, and start swaying along with him. I lay my head against his chest, as his arm wraps around my waist, and his other hand holds mine. We are strangers, yet the same in this moment. I feel loved, and secure in his arms. I feel as if my dad is with me here again.
As he pulls me closer towards his body, the song slowly goes into the next verse:
I feel wonderful because I see,
The love light in your eyes
And the wonder of it all,
Is that you just don't realize how much I love you.
He says in a faint voice, "Cale." As he pulls back, I see a smile that comes upon his face. It made me squeal, but I kept it inside.
"Paige." And smiled back. He took my hand and shook it. What a gentleman. Then out of nowhere, he pulled me towards him. We ran, stumbling on each other along the way.
We ended up never going back to the others, even though they were having a bonfire. I just sat right before the wave could hit my feet, and he sat right behind me. It seems like we could've gone on for hours talking. It was unplanned, unsuspected, but just that perfect click.
"Don't you miss your parents?" I asked as he played with my hair from behind.
"Of course I do. I may be in California, with the beaches and my dream career, but I sure would do anything for them. I love them so much. I rarely see my family anymore. University has me caged from them, and I would do anything to go and see them again. Don't you miss your family?" He says sincerely.
"That song brings me back to them." I say, truly. This song reminds me of my father, offering me his hand. My mother and my little brothers dancing with each other, and just feeling safe from everything that harmed me in reality. In those moments, I knew no one could hurt me and nobody could take me away from anything that I desired. It was pure bliss.
It was quiet, so I decided to pull out my ear plugs again and as I offer him one of them, he looks at me. He looks at me the way my dad had, every time he was proud of me or was about to tuck me in at night, and kiss me on the forehead. It was that looked that ensured me I was loved.
I looked at him wholeheartedly. He moved his hand towards my hair and tucked it behind my ear.
"You are beautiful, Paige." He says. Cale leans in, towards me, and I shut my eyes.
He kissed me on the cheek. It was so soft and assuring. It left me speechless.
I was still holding my ear piece, and he took it. He took my hand offering another dance, and I pulled his hand, and jumped. We were idiots dancing to Dexy's Midnight Runners in the moonlight.
