Harleen stood up from the bench she had sat at for the past ten minutes and brushed the crumbs of her sandwich off her skirt. Alec, her boyfriend of two years waltzed over to her, and kissed her softly. He was tall and lanky, disproportioned, yet attractive, with ashy blonde hair and deep brown eyes.
"Where were you? I just finished my lunch, lunch that I was planning on eating with you." She snapped playfully, grinning up at him. He pouted in response.
"I'm sorry, Lily, there were dogs, and the owner was talking to me about them-" He took her hand and they began to walk across the large green field, "Long story short, I've done some quick research, and I think we should get a dog."
"That's a big step."
"Yeah well, I think we're ready for it, we have a house together, and it's not like either of us want an actual baby any time soon, so maybe a dog is the best bet." Alec stopped and looked at her, then knelt on the grass in front of her. "Lily Aldridge, will you get a dog with me?"
Harleen winced internally, before nodding. Alec jumped up and proceeded to dance around her like a child before kissing her.
"This is the best day of my life." He whispered, his hands resting on her cheeks, she smiled.
"Ditto."
They continued to walk across the field, dodging a group of teenage boys who were playing rugby, and weaving through a group of tired-looking parents, watching their toddlers smack each other with whatever they had in their hands.
"New Zealand summers are the best." Alec stated, Harleen laughed.
"Clearly you haven't been to Gotham. It has the perfect summer, then the perfect winter, it doesn't snow in Wellington."
"It did once."
"But that wasn't real snow, it didn't land." Alec sighed, "But Gotham doesn't have beaches like they do here I guess, and the water tastes nicer."
"Wellington water is the best." He agreed, nodding excitedly, "We should probably go home, quick, Google how much your old house was worth, then we'll see how much it goes up by in the five minute drive home."
"The Auckland housing market is bad, but not that bad." Harleen giggled, the flat had been a rundown piece of shit, but it was all she could afford, what with the limited money she had.
They got into Alec's car, which he loved more than anything, and would definitely not let a dog inside it.
"What kind of dog?" Harleen asked as he pulled out and began the short drive home.
"Maybe a border collie? My friend has this Dutch dog, I forget what it's called, and it looks like a border collie crossed with a springer spaniel."
"Something less energetic perhaps, I mean, I teach all day and you're off designing houses and shit."
But Harleen didn't hear Alec's answer, she was too busy looking at the flash of green that entered her vision, not the constant natural green of New Zealand, but the electric neon of her ex's hair. Her phone buzzed, and she held her breath, hoping he hadn't found her, praying.
'At least you tried.' She exhaled, looking at the contact name which read 'Taylor' in bold. She had been Harleen's mentor, and they were still friends.
"Who was that?" Alec asked as he turned the car into their garage, being careful to make enough space for both of them to open the doors without scratching the paint off.
"Taylor, I texted her about a student who was being particularly bad the other day, she's lost all sympathy since she got preggers." Alec chuckled, and clicked the button to close the garage door. "I'll get the mail."
