The last place in the universe I wanted to end up at was purgatory. I swore loudly, and for reasons beyond my understanding, I’d been transported here without Gabe. I needed to get back to earth, to save Evan who’d just been mowed down by a minivan. As seconds passed, which were probably hours on earth, I felt my frustration level increase.
“Damn it!” I yelled, feeling my frustration boiling over. My voice echoed, but no one was here to listen. I was alone, and Evan was probably dying. It was my fault; Gabe had been right.
“Macy,” a distinctly male voice said. I turned and there was Evan, wearing the same worn out sweater and jeans he’d been wearing before, but now blood stains were speckled down the front of his pants.
“Evan,” I whispered. “No, you can’t be here. That means…”
“Macy, oh my god, it’s you,” he said, grabbing me for a hug. “But how is this possible, you’re dead? I don’t even care, I’ve missed you so much.”
“Evan you can’t be here,” I said, grabbing his shoulders and shaking him. “Quick try to wake up. Wake up, now!”
“Macy, what are you talking about?” Evan said. “Where are we?”
“Evan, I need you to stay calm,” I said. “But this is purgatory. And if you’re here, it’s because you’re dead.”
“No, I am not dead,” he said. “I was just talking to my girlfriend and then…”
The memory was hitting him in flashes, and I could see it replaying in his mind. His smile disappeared, washed away with a wave of panic in his eyes.
“The minivan,” Evan said. “I died…because some douche bag was jealous of me and Lauren. Wait, did you just say we’re in purgatory?”
“It’s a long story,” I said. “I am so sorry Evan, I’ll fix it. I can fix this.”
“Why are you sorry,” Evan said. “I mean, yes, I’m dead. But I got to see you. And hey, it’s not like you hit me with the minivan. It’s not your fault Macy.”
“Actually it is,” Another voice said.
Out of nowhere, Zed appeared, wearing a suit and an angry scowl.
“What?” Evan said. “Macy… Macy killed me?”
“You’re not dead,” Zed replied. “But you’re in a continuous coma. Medical science will never be able to revive you, so it’s up to the gods to decide your fate.”
“He’s not dead yet?” I asked. “There is still hope, how do I fix this?”
“You don’t,” Zed said. “Macy, do you realize what you’ve done? You’ve caused a second glitch. Destiny is literally unravelling now. And over what, some high school jealousy? An old feud with a bitchy cheerleader?”
“I didn’t mean to,” I said. “I didn’t mean to miss, I just, I hesitated.”
“I put my neck out there for you kid, I really did. I could have let you rot here in purgatory, but I gave you a good job. I even arranged for Gabe to accompany you, be your friend. And now, it’s on my shoulders.”
“Zed, I am sorry, I didn’t mean to…”
“What is going on?” Evan asked, screaming. “What are you guys talking about, and who the hell are you?”
