Chapter 3.
To some Grace's reaction to Jake's suggestion of how to prove him wrong might seem a little over dramatic, but you see Grace was really embarrassed whenever the subject of her virginity and how she lost it, came up. Lying in her bed that evening, Grace could not sleep. Jake's chuckling still rang in her ears. For all of her she could not understand the arrogance of Jake. She still did not know what Jim meant with 'our new neighbour', but she really hopes it has nothing to do with the empty apartment next door. Having a neighbour that sexy and arrogant could make a girl crazy.
What did he think of her, that she is just one of those sluts that see a handsome man and the legs flies open? She has known him for five minutes, for Pete's sake, and by knows she means his name. It sure as hell made her see a bit more of his personality. Grace decided that Jake must be one of those player/ man-whore types. Arrogant with the ego as big as... the world's population, no that's still too small... oh, oh yeah infinity... that might just work... or maybe the world's population times infinity...Grace only slept with one guy and only once. Grace thought back to the day she lost her virginity and how she knew it happened and why, but can't remember it at all. All she remembered was waking up in an empty bed with a guy's shirt on in a pitch dark room and a party booming downstairs.
As a sixteen year old Grace met Darren her cousin's best friend. Her first crush she ever had. They became friends through messages and phone calls as he lived a few towns away. Grace invited Darren to her seventeenth birthday along with her cousins, they would spend the day at the park and later they would go to the movies. The whole day Darren would try to be close to her or touch her or try to have private conversations with her. He sought her out. Grace was so happy to see that Darren would go out of his way to seek her out. His touches made her warm and she felt wanted.
Just before it was time to go to the movies, Darren asked Grace to walk with him to the pond to feed the bread to the ducks. Grace thought of how romantic it felt when he slipped his hand in to hers when they walked side by side. A comfortable silence surrounded them till they reached the pond. Taking the bread out of the packet he held it out to her so she could feed the ducks, smiling shyly she took a piece of the bread and started to break it in pieces and throwing it into the pond. The late afternoon glow started to paint the park in a yellow glow. Darren looked at Grace with a small smile on his face, his head tilted to the right.
"You know Grace, you look really pretty today." Darren broke the silence.
"Thank you, Darren. You look nice too." Grace said looking at her feet, her hair forming a curtain around her face.
"I wanted to ask you something today, but it just never seems like the right time." Darren commented. Grace placed her hair behind her ear and gave Darren a nod with her head to indicate for him to continue. Cleaning his throat he continued: "You know how we've been friends for a while now?"
"yeah..." Grace confirmed and really hoping that this conversation will lead to where she dreamt so many nights about. She couldn't wait to be called his girlfriend.
"I really hope this won't make things weird." Darren said nervously. Looking at Grace he took a deep breath and started again. "Would you... uhm ..." Darren moved closer to Grace taking her hands in his. Their eyes connected. 'This is it.' Grace thought. "Grace ... would you please help me? You see there is this girl I really like and I wanted to make her jealous the whole day so far. So will you please pretend I just asked you to be my girlfriend? It will only be for a short while." Darren rumbled off.
Grace's mind stood still, unable to register what just happened and then like a bucket of cold water it hit her. "Well, that sure as hell was not what I dreamt about." Grace said flatly. Shocked at how she could have been so ignorant. "Did you just admit that you basically just used me the whole day already, to make someone else jealous?" Grace started to get mad at herself for so naively getting her hopes up. She felt so stupid. "You know I like you, you made me feel like you liked me too. You made me look like a fool with all your gestures and touches! I thought... I thought... ugh!" Grace hated the fact that ever since she was little when she got mad, she would want to put her thoughts in to words, but it just never seemed to work. Stomping her foot in frustration she let her disappointment take over.
"So would you?" Darren asked unsure, with a questioning look.
"Oh, hell no!" Grace yelled. "I can't believe how selfish he actually is! Stupid, Stupid me!" Grace mumbled to herself as she stormed off.
