She felt warm and drowsy. Cozy. Where was she?
Something soft poked her side. Then again. It wouldn't let her sleep. She grunted, annoyed. She heard a hushed voice.
"Are you awake, yet?" asked a quiet, squeaky, voice.
"Moss, what are you doing?" murmured a sleepy voice. "Let her sleep..."
"Um...nothing," mewed Moss unconvincingly.
She blinked open her eyes, aware that she wouldn't be able to fall back asleep for a while. She was awed by the sight. She lay in a nest of moss, curled against warm fur. Warm sunlight filtered through the leaves above her, dappling the floor with pale yellow rays. Tiny plants sprung up from around the edges of the den, a dazzling green. She looked over and saw her brother, Moss. He was white with large black splotches on his pelt. He noticed her and looked at her, his yellow eyes shining.
"She's awake!" he squeaked. "Come on, let's go explore, Ebony!"
Ebony.
That's my name, right?
Her mother chuckled from above her. Ebony looked up and saw her. She was white with gray tabby patches and pale but beautiful green eyes. Birch, her mother, yawned. She had heard the name Birch before. That was her.
"Good morning, Ebony," she meowed softly.
"Good morning," she replied quietly.
She stood up slowly, feeling a bit awkward on her paws. She padded around the den, sniffing everything she found interesting. She found a little purple flower that smelled very nice.
"Wanna play a game I made?" asked Moss excitedly from behind her, startling her a bit.
"Okay."
Moss grinned and ran around the den, collecting twigs and moss, presumably for his game.
Birch smiled, then stood up. "I'm going to go hunting. You two stay here, alright?"
"Okay, Mom!" said Moss around a mouthful of moss.
Ebony watched as Birch padded out of the den, her fluffy tail swaying behind her as she disappeared into the undergrowth.
"Alright, I'll teach you how to play," began Moss. "So first, one of us throws the moss away, then throws the twigs over the floor. The other one has to try to catch the moss ball without touching any twigs. Sound good?"
Ebony nodded, ready to play.
"Okay, I'll throw first. Get ready," said Moss, picking up all the moss and twigs in his mouth before littering them around the den. "Go!"
Ebony walked towards the moss, watching where she put her paws and trying not to touch the twigs. This is easy! She looked upwards and stepped more confidently. She hopped over the last bit of twigs, picking up the moss ball proudly. I won!
"Wow, that looked really easy!" mewed Moss thoughtfully. "I'll have to work on making it even harder, then."
Ebony chuckled. Everything is perfect.
