Ebony lay in the sand, panting heavily. She began to feel drowzy. I need to stay awake. There is no choice.
She watched quietly as Birch and Scorcheyes fought. Her whole body screamed for her to move; to fight. But she couldn't move. All she could do was watch and hope he wouldn't kill her. Her insides burned with rage at being so helpless and weak. She let out a huff.
Birch and Scorcheyes fought for a while longer. It was clear that Birch was getting weaker. It wouldn't take long now. Before she gave out. Ebony's eyesight clouded with anguish. It was the strongest emotion she had ever felt...
She closed her eyes tightly as Birch fell. She knew Scorcheyes was going to kill her mother. She couldn't watch anymore.
She heard fast approaching pawsteps, a feral snarl, then liquid splattering against something. Lastly, and most painfully, a tiny whimper.
But it wasn't Birch's voice.
Ebony opened her eyes and looked around. Her eyes widened, pupils narrowing to slits. Her heart pounded. Scorcheyes stood over Birch. He had clearly gone in for a killing bite, but missed. In his jaws, he held white and black fur. Had he only grasped fur? Then, the fur in his mouth convulsed in pain, blood cascading to the ground.
"No!" gasped Ebony, eyes clouding.
In Scorcheyes' mouth, he held the injured form of Moss. He dropped the kit and stared down at him grimly.
"The black and white one. Shame," he said dully, kicking Moss away.
Her heart ached excruciatingly as her brother was thrown aside like a piece of dirt. He was only a kit like her, he shouldn't die! She wanted so much to go and protect her brother, but she could barely stand up, much less walk.
She didn't know what to do. Would Scorcheyes kill her, too? She didn't know what she was going to do without her family. She would die anyways.
...
Crunch.
...
A nauseating crunch echoed through the quiet and Ebony knew Birch was dead.
Scorcheyes padded over to Ebony and sniffed her. She shivered and closed her eyes, waiting for death to slice through her neck in the form of Scorcheyes' canines.
"No point in killing you now," he said quietly. "You'll bleed out soon, anyways. See you around, daughter."
A sharp claw sliced across her face, hot and sticky blood trickled down. She felt tired and her whole body ached. She let out a long, mournful cry into the darkness. This was how she died. Like he said, she would bleed to death here. After a while, she was only dimly aware of her surroundings. She heard muffled pawsteps, murmurs, and gasps, as well as a voice shouting something.
Had they come to take her? Is that what happened when you died?
...
She let out a tiny, quivering, sigh.
It was finally over.
