Ebony opened her eyes and yawned. She had been laying in the same nest for a few days, not moving much at all, though she wanted to.

Two black cats padded into the den. One was who she knew as Somberpaw. He was a black tom with long fur, a white belly, and white ear-tips. He smiled at Ebony. He had come to see her a few times and they had chatted. He had told her about clan life and about Starclan, and a whole bunch of cool stuff. He said that he was training to be a warrior, so he was an apprentice. When Ebony was older, she would train to be a warrior, too!

She didn't recognize the other cat, though. She was about the same size as Somberpaw, so she was probably an apprentice, too. Her fur was sleek and she was jet black. Her eyes startled Ebony. One of her eyes was amber, the other an icy blue color. She shot a glare at Somberpaw.

"Why'd you make me come here?" she spat at Somberpaw.

"So you can meet my friend, Ebony!" he meowed proudly.

The she-cat rolled her eyes. "Just because I'm your sister doesn't mean I want to come with you everywhere."

Somberpaw turned to Ebony, ignoring his sister's rudeness. "Ebony, this is my sister, Ghostpaw. Ghostpaw, this is Ebony."

Ghostpaw sighed. "Pleasure to meet you."

She didn't seem like she meant it at all, but Ebony dipped her head to her in greeting.

"I'll leave so you guys can hang out together," meowed Somberpaw happily. "You seem like you would make good friends!"

"Are you kidding me, Somberpaw?" hissed Ghostpaw.

But Somberpaw had already quickly left the den, leaving Ebony and Ghostpaw alone in an awkward silence. Ebony shifted her paws, trying to think of something to say.

"Are you training to be a warrior?" she asked Ghostpaw, who was looking around the den.

Ghostpaw nodded. "What's it to you?"

Ebony's whiskers twitched. "I dunno. I'm just waiting for my mother to come back for me, then I think I'll leave."

Ghostpaw's ears flattened and her eyes flashed with anger. She looked away from Ebony.

"Oh no, did I say something bad? I'm so sorry..." she mewed, looking down at her paws.

          Ghostpaw sighed. "It's okay."

Ebony risked taking a quick glance up at Ghostpaw. Ghostpaw was still staring off elsewhere,  but now, she looked a bit sad.

          "Are you sure?"

Ghostpaw nodded. "I don't want to talk about it anymore."

Ebony dipped her head. "Okay. I'm sorry."

Somberpaw poked his head inside the den. "Ghostpaw, Cloudstrike wants us on a patrol."

Ghostpaw nodded and stood up. She cast a glance at Ebony and for a moment, they just stared at eachother, before Ghostpaw turned away and followed Somberpaw out of the den.
