Chapter 6

A phone rang. James stirred.

He slowly opened his eyes.

Nadine.

He smiled as he gaze at her, sleeping soundly besides him.

He slowly sat up, careful not to wake her up.

He then reached for his phone on the bedside table.

He frowned when he saw who was calling.

It was his manager. He sighed in resignation and answered, cautiously standing up.

"James. Are you coming to work today?" His manager said without preamble.

"Uhm, I--"

"You really can't take a leave today." He was cut off. "James, this is a very important time for you. I will expect you in an hour, okay?" His manager said in one breath and hang up on him.

James sighed. He didn't want to go. He didn't want to leave Nadine.

Suddenly, his phone rang again.

It was Bret.

He answered his phone. "Hello?"

"Yo, James." Bret said energetically.

"Yes?" James said, not feeling as energetic.

"Jaye, are you still in your apartment?" Bret asked.

"Ah, yeah... Why?"

"Me and Sam is coming to fetch you! Just to be sure, since you were sick yesterday. We're coming now." Bret said and for the second time, the line went dead to James.

He groaned and looked at the clock. It was 6AM.

"Work?"

James hadn't notice Nadine.

He smiled at her. "Sorry, did I wake you up?"

She shook her head, smiling. "Are you going today?" She asked again.

He frowned. "Yes... but I'll try to go back soon. I'll just show my face." He said.

She shook her head again. "It's okay, James. I know you have responsibilities."

His frowned deepend. "I don't want to leave."

"I'll be fine." She said. "Go get ready."

James hesitantly nodded.

There was a knock on the door.

"James!" It was Sam's voice.

James sighed.

Nadine giggled. He pouted at her.

"Don't worry." She mouthed. "Take care."

He smiled. "I'll be back as soon as I can." He mouthed back.

"Coming!" He called to Bret and Sam. They were still insistently knocking on his door.

He turned to her again and smiled his goodbye.

But Nadine leaned in and kissed him.

He stared at her, wide-eyed.
