Kenji’s POV
I stepped into the empty classroom, waiting for Zahra to come and finish whatever homework she didn’t get to finish previously. I suppose I have to teach her how to stay on top of her schoolwork. I laughed to myself.
“What are you smiling in the distance for?” The sweetest voice flows towards me.
I turned towards that direction to see Zahra standing there flawlessly.
“I was just thinking about you.” I remarked, motioning for her to take a seat.
She walked over and took a seat closest to my left.
“I hope it was good things.” She huffed, slipping her book bag off her shoulders and onto the floor.
“It always is.” I smiled.
“So check it out Kenji..wait..” Zahra paused and looked at me with a sheepish grin.
“What?” I asked skeptically.
“Can I call you Ken?” She beamed.
“No no no no no…I will not be referred to as a Barbie.” I replied, placing my hand over my face.
“Ha-ha, come on!” Zahra reached over and removed my hand from my face.
I disobediently placed my other hand back over it.
“Aniyo, aniyo!” I laughed.
After a couple seconds of silence, I took a glimpse at Zahra. She was frozen in the position of getting ready to grab my hand with a starry-eyed expression.
“What? I asked, my hand still over my face.
“Did you just speak in Korean to me?” She asked, slowly moving closer towards me.
“Ne” I replied, removing my hand and grinning brightly at her.
“Ne means no?” She asked, sounding like a little girl.
“No, ne means yes; aniyo, means no.” I winked at her.
Before I knew it, I was being embraced into a hug that could have stopped my heart.
“Well, well, well. If it isn’t the freak show.” A cruel voice from the doorway commented.
Zahra let go of me and turned to shoot daggers at the girl who just walked in. The girl made her way towards my desk and sat on it. I was about to stand when I felt the girls hand push my shoulder down, forcing me to sit.
“Hey, you can say whatever you want, but you will NOT touch anyone. You hear me?” Zahra stood quickly from her seat.
“Ha! That’s right, protect your man girl.” The girl mocked.
Just when Zahra was about to step closer towards the girl, I stood at rapid speed and stopped her.
“Oh look, he’s a body guard!” The girl exclaimed, laughing aloud.
I grabbed Zahra’s book bag and led her out into the hallway. I looked at her, she seemed unbelievably calm at this moment.
“Here, get a drink of water.” I stopped at a water fountain.
“Ok. But you first.” She suggested.
A confused expression crossed my face but I followed her instructions anyway. While taking a sip of the water, I heard footsteps running from me. I spun around to see Zahra running straight for the room we’ve just exited from.
“Zahra!” I screamed for her, slinging her book bag over my shoulder and running after her in one act.
Zahra didn’t stop running. She entered the room and I heard the door slam immediately behind her.
“Zahra!” I screamed once more before I reached the door.
I twisted the doorknob but it wouldn’t open. I peeked through the glass and saw Zahra screaming in the girl’s face who was still sitting on top of the desk.
“Open this door Zahra!” I violently shook the door handle.
“Excuse me, boy! What is your problem?” A janitor asked me in annoyance.
“I need help getting into this room.” I spoke frantically, keeping an eye on her.
Zahra’s POV
This girl should of seen this coming, she had no right to talk to me and touch my man like that.
“Please! I didn’t mean it! Please don’t hurt me!” The girl pleaded, scooting back from me.
“Oh?! But you sure seemed like you meant it when you said it!” I spat my words into her face.
The girl put her hands up in defense.
I backed away from the girl and folded my arms. That is when I heard my name being shouted from outside the door. My head snapped towards that direction and I walked slowly towards the door. I opened the door to find Kenji standing there with the janitor trying to open the door.
I grabbed my book bag, which was on the floor and made my way towards the cafeteria.
“Zahra!” Kenji screamed towards me, not moving a single muscle.
For some reason, I couldn’t walk away from him. So I stopped.
“She tried to kill me!” I heard the girl scream from behind me.
I slowly turned around to see the girl clutched to Kenji’s side.
Oh….hell…no.
“That’s it!” I screamed, tossing my book bag to the side and speed walking towards the girl.
“This time I won’t stop myself!” I exclaimed, stepping in front of the girl.
My arms extended to push the girl off of Kenji but was stopped in mid air. Kenji had stood in front of the girl and grabbed my wrists.
“Stop it, Zahra! Calm down!” He spoke authoritatively to me.
I looked up into his chocolate eyes and instantly felt my heart begin to drop.
What was wrong with me? Why was I acting like a dog off a leash? Anyone who decides to touch him, I feel like ripping their heads off. But she didn’t just touch him, she insulted us!
“She insulted us!” I screamed, I felt the hot tears welling up in my eyes.
Without a word, Kenji grabbed hold of my hand and walked me to the cafeteria, scooping up my book bag on the way.
We took the farthest seat from the entrance. Kenji sat me down on the stool and he sat on the ground in front of me. He looked up at me and grabbed my hands.
“Zahra, I have to admit, I’ve never seen you like this.” He stated, waiting eagerly for my response.
“I’m sorry.” I replied, a tear running down my cheek.
Why was I crying? Pull yourself together! I straightened my position on the stool and loosed one of my hands so I can wipe the tear away, but Kenji beat me to it.
